Utilities question when closing...

Just curious, how long before closing did you call and arrange the utilities? We aren't closing until 3/30 but I was wondering how far in advance I should call utilities. Thanks!

Re: Utilities question when closing...

you can call and make appointments, just remember to cancel if the date gets moved...

after moving in, then calling can be a pain as they are limited to what days they can come after u move without being a week away appointment

Re: Utilities question when closing...

I actually called from my cell phone while driving to the closing and then actually called back after closing saying that the old owners wont be out for a few days and they adjusted everything.

I had no idea I even had to call. We found out that morning that we were closing. I had so much going on at the same time that I was so overwhelmed.

Re: Utilities question when closing...

you shouldnt call until closer to the closing date. that 3/30 date should just be an estimate and may change.

Re: Utilities question when closing...

Our lawyer sent us a letter 2 weeks before closing and outlined that we needed to call the utilities and provided the numbers for us to get final readings. We called each utility co and they said they would do a final reading on the morning of our closing and bill each separately starting that day.

Re: Utilities question when closing...

I have began calling for cable & phone, but I haven't for electric yet. I may do that later this week. See we are in a uniquely luckily situation. I've already spoke to the sellers and they will be out of the house the day before closing, so its our right after closing!!

i called a few days before and the seller requested they be shut off a few days after so ultimately, we had "free" gas and electric for a few days. Chat Icon Chat Icon
