Vacation in the Outer Banks?

Which town and why?
Looking for the nicest beaches and some activities as well since we'd be traveling with kids.
Anyone recommend a rental company?

Also what summer month (late May-Aug) is a good time to go for beaching it and the water being warm enough to swim in?

Re: Vacation in the Outer Banks?

my parents own a house down there... it depends on what your looking for.
if you want more "action", more things to do, more built up... i would try kitty hawk, nags head, duck, kill devil hills....
BUT if you want slightly more relaxing and less built up, try Cape Hatteras. This is where my parents house is. its a national seashore so a lot of is preserved and very clean and peaceful. theres still a lot to do there, though. My parents house is in the town of Avon on Cape Hatteras and there is a nice grocery store, a bunch of good restaurants, mini golf course, and places to rent kayaks, jet skis, etc. Cape Hatteras is also where teh cape hatteras light house is, and where the ferry to Ocracoke island is ( its a free ferry ride, you take your car on the ferry. theres not too much to do on ocracoke- some of the wild ponies are there, theres a small lighthouse, some shops and restaurants... but the ferry is free and it something to break up "beach days").
as far as rental agencies--- my parents rent through sun realty (sunrealtync.com). theres also surf and sound realty, hatteras realty, midgett realty.... most of their sites have a serach where you can put in the size of the house you want, what town, etc, and it comes back with a lot of pictures of the houses they have available so you can pick.
its an AWESOME place to go.. soooo relaxing and totally different than the beaches up here. let me know if you have any more questions! Chat Icon

you're welcome!! let me know if you have any questions as you keep looking into it!
i've only ever been down there in the summer- but i would think anytime from like the end of may to like mid september would be warm enough for beach weather. you have to watch toward the end of summer though becasue they do tend to get hit by a lot of the tropical storms and hurricanes...

We rented a house for next summer in Kill Devil Hills. I am soooo excited!!!!! It is right on the beach with our own pool and hot tub. And the house comes with all baby stuff already, crib highchair, etc.

We are going in June and used Carolina Designs.com.
