The vaccine prevents you from getting sick, you could still transmit the virus to others. The same rules for masking, distancing, etc. still apply even if you have the vaccine.
Except that the recommendations have changed. Per the CDC you do not need to quarantine after exposure if you were vaccinated within 3 months. Then why would you need to quarantine after travel - where there is no definitive exposure?
I'm not saying you don't need to wear masks, socially distance, etc., but if you are in contact with a known case of COVID and were vaccinated within 90 days, you don't have to stay locked in your home so logically, why would you need to quarantine after travel as long as it is within 3 months (as of now)?
I'm not planning on getting the vaccine any time soon, so this doesn't affect me one way or the other, but logically the travel restrictions don't make a lot of sense right now.
I thought I read you don't have to quarantine if you're completely vaccinated and have no symptoms. But if you have symptoms, you'll still need to quarantine- vaccinated or not.
ETA: But since you can spread the disease before showing symptoms, why wouldn't you still need to quarantine, maybe for a shorter period of time? I don't know, it all seems so arbitrary.
It does seem completely arbitrary. And you're right, if you have no symptoms you don't need to quarantine, but doesn't that apply regardless? Like if I have a fever even if I have been vaccinated and with a known exposure or not, I should stay home. Right?
I would hope that people (vaccinated or not) at least know that!

The other logic flow in the travel quarantine is that I am probably more likely to be exposed right here in NY in my daily life. Why do they act like every other state you travel to is a hot bed of unchecked Covid cases? I can travel into NYC and ride the subways all day long but I cant' go sit on a beach in a private rental home in another state?
Exactly!!!

I'm not sure if you're talking about a specific state or whatever and I missed it but several states have no mask mandates and are a shit show.
I have a lot of family and friends all over Florida and it varies by county and city. There are several parts where no masks are required and even where they are their idiot governor made it so it cannot really be enforced anyway. I have a friend who is so disgusted by the morons she is surrounded by who refuse to wear a mask that she would like to move back here but has been priced out.
I don't agree with everything Cuomo does but he is 100% correct to protect NYers by requiring testing/quarantining for travelers from states that aren't taking this seriously.

What states, that are taking it seriously, are not on the quarantine list then? Surely there must be some with just as strict draconian measures no? Because i feel like every freaking state is on the list unless it's a contiguous state like CT or NJ Or does he believe that NY is the ONLY state in the nation taking it seriously in his narcissistic mind? That must be it. Because I have to tell you ,we weren't doing so great for a while there either. Recently actually. In fact we probably had higher rates than plenty of those states on his list. Maybe they should have made US quarantine when we went to their states- NY being a hot bed of Covid as it was. NY isn't the center of the universe and is far from perfect despite with the King wants to believe

I'm honestly not sure about other states and their rules because I haven't had reason to care. I only know details about FL because I am constantly hearing about the experiences of friends and family.
Many states did make us quarantine when we went to their states.
But I agree that it makes sense that states with similar restrictions to ours probably "deserve" more lenient travel rules than places I mentioned like FL. The mask mandate is the big one but there are other restrictions/items to consider.
Part of the frustration seems to be that several of the states without a mandate are popular vacation destinations for NYers. I know I would like to get down to FL but I'm holding off. I'm fully vaccinated but neither DH nor DS is eligible yet and I'm not putting them at risk from the jackasses that are carrying on as usual.

Re: Vaccine and travel
Florida's covid rates are similar if not better than ours even with little to no restrictions. The travel restrictions are punitive and nothing more. Cuomo wants to limit NYers as much as he can and this is one way to do it. He does not follow the CDC recommendations regarding travel. It's outrageous. NY has always been and is still one of the worst positivity and death rates. To pretend like it's not is crazy.

They are better than ours - I checked yesterday. We at 42 people per 100k and they are at 31 per 100k. The NYC metro area is at 48 per 100k. Florida also has a lower infection rate than NY.

So if I take my DD to NYC to go to a museum and lunch over the break, technically she should have to quarantine before being allowed back in school next week. But yeah, that only applies to Florida...a state in better shape than us. Makes sense.

Sorry, but where are you getting these numbers from? Not being snarky, just genuinely curious because the numbers I have here are different.
Per 100,000 I have: 287 for NY 248 for Florida And 61 for Germany.
These numbers are from the Robert Koch Institute, like John Hopkins in Germany. I’ve been comparing the numbers to my family in NY, so I’m a bit surprised by your numbers.

Your numbers look a lot worse. But NY is still worse than Florida.
These are daily new cases - there is a website www.covidactnow.org which details the metrics - I used it when looking to travel over the summer to predict which states would be on "the list".

The only thing I can see is that your site is new cases per day and my site is in the last 7 days, which would make sense because 42 times 7 is 294. That would make Germany’s rate per day about 9.
Still, like you said the rate is lower in Florida. However, I think that is absolutely crazy compared to here. We started at ~200 (7 days) and it took months of lockdown to get it to 61. MONTHS. And we are still going.
I just don’t see how the US is going to get the numbers down any time soon. I really don’t.
Kind of off topic from the OP, but IMO people should be quarantining until more is known about this virus. I find the after effects worrying.

I haven't looked at the site since the summer, when the metric was 10/100k new cases so things definitely are a lot higher than they were.
I don't think a full lockdown will help though - the virus isn't going anywhere, and once things open the numbers will creep back up.

I don’t think a one size fits all makes any sense. I said it on another thread. I can go to Florida and Disney with my family and I have heard how strict they are with masks and following regulations. I have to quarantine (which extended my time off from work is not possible so I can’t travel) but I can rent a house in Pennsylvania with four other families and not wear a mask and nearly as much....and not quarantine.
If you have symptoms stay home. If you test on day one when you are back from any trip move on with your life. I have more of a chance of catching covid in my daily regular life in New York than if I go to Disney.

I definitely agree with this! I said over the summer, I could go to Kalahari without quarantining (and still can) but I couldn't go visit my friend who was isolated at her lakehouse in Ohio without a quarantine (and still can't do that either). What is more risky? My kids have gotten sick after trips to Kalahari when it wasn't a pandemic.

Are there other states requiring quarantine when returning?
My personal favorite, I have friends who are away this break and flew out of Newark and are “driving” into NY to “avoid” quarantine. Granted, they are just going to their condo and sitting on the beach.

Ohio does - states reporting 15% positive testing rates or higher for the last week. Currently the only states on it are Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, South Dakota and Mississippi. They are still requiring a 14 day quarantine.
ETA - I found a state by state list:

I don’t think a one size fits all makes any sense. I said it on another thread. I can go to Florida and Disney with my family and I have heard how strict they are with masks and following regulations. When we flew into Newark they actually had someone at baggage claim telling people that they are required to quarantine if they were driving to NY. Obviously no one identified themselves as traveling to NY but I thought it was dumb to even have someone do it.

Re: Vaccine and travel
I'm not debating whether or not you should quarantine when returning from travel.
What is odd though is that if you are FULLY VACCINATED you are still required to quarantine. This, after the CDC changed their recommendations that if you are fully vaccinated you do not need to quarantine (unless you have symptoms) after DIRECT KNOWN EXPOSURE.
If you are fully vaccinated and have no symptoms why would you need to quarantine because you went out of state?
My DH has been fully vaccinated. If I have COVID, he does not quarantine as long as he is symptom-free. However, if we go on vacation, he must quarantine even if we don't know if he came into contact with anyone who is positive?
There is NO logic behind that.

That, like a lot of things, definitely makes no sense.
I'm hoping soon they will ease up on travel - I will be fully vaccinated by mid April.

I think it’s because the vaccine helps reduce symptomatic disease. It does not help with prevention of spread or transmission. U can still catch it and be asymptomatic. Maybe that’s their reasoning?

Agree. I know many families that purposely go to Pennsylvania so they don’t have to quarantine when they get back to NY. What makes states like PA, NJ, CT, etc so special that u don’t have to quarantine compared to others states? It makes zero sense no matter how u slice it.

So the CDC is ok with not quarantining. NYS is ok with not quarantining UNLESS you left the state....then you have to quarantine.
I keep saying it - there is NO logic being applied here.

I’m with u, believe me.
How would they know if travelers are asymptomatic though? Are they expecting testing to be pushed harder? Cause that’d be the only way of knowing -despise being vaccinated. And then what would happen once the 90 days of being vaccinated have passed? U have to still quarantine or get vaccinated again?

The last I read is because people work in NJ, CT and PA on a daily basis so that’s why they are exempt from the testing/quarantining

If you travel to those states for work then fine, you can't quarantine. But if you are traveling for vacation or pleasure why should it be any different than Florida?
