Vaccine memory
I am dating myself here. I have a pretty vivid memory of my mom taking myself and my siblings to a school gymnasium and waiting on a long line for a vaccine. Must have been the mid 70's, I was maybe 5. I want to say it was measles or polio? Does anyone remember that? Literally everyone just did it without question, lol.

Yes, I remember that. If I recall correctly it was for German measles (but I am not 100% sure if that is the case.) I remember lining up in elementary school for it

Vaccine memory
I went in the 90s in high school to the school to get a MMR booster. I guess there were outbreaks of measles or mumps in the area and it was determined most of us needed a booster since we got the first vaccine so young.

Re: Vaccine memory
So there is the now almost defunct mall near us and my DH is always telling me how his mom used to take him and his siblings there for vaccines in the 70s and they'd wait on this long line . But i kept saying- why weren't you getting you vaccines are your pediatrician? I know it's not an insurance issue a his dad was a cop with good health insurance. And he does remember going to his family pediatrician, so he had one.
I found that so odd. We only ever got shots as kids at the doctor. I'm curious what that mall vaccine thing was about. I would guess if you didn't have health insurance ad couldn't afford it it was probably some free vaccine clinic. But like I said, his family had insurance.

Funny you mention that as my mom was just telling me a story how one of my dad's coworkers wife walked to Smith Haven Mall to get some type of vaccine in the late 70's, 80's. It was way before cellphones and someone was trying to get in touch with her to tell her a story just came out that said getting the vaccine could cause breast cancer. It was too late as when she got home she talked to them and unfortunately this woman did pass from breast cancer years later.

I kind of recall it being a similar situation to now, there was an outbreak and a vaccine developed so they gave it in mass amounts in large buildings. All my other vaccines were given by the pediatrician and we did have insurance.

Interesting. Maybe that was why. I don't recall ever getting a vaccine like that, but I'm a few years younger than DH Maybe there was some outbreak that required a booster like you said

Re: Vaccine memory
This happened in my high school as well. i remember being in 10th grade and my shots were ok and didn't need a booster.
But then in 12th grade (1991) it happened again and I needed to get a booster. We went down during English class. sat in an auditorium and waiteed until we were called. Lines of nurses at lunch tables giving the shots on the theatre stage.
I think they just sent a note home saying this was what we were doing. No permission slips or anything.

Re: Vaccine memory
I was born in the 70s and I do not remember this at all.
My mother also wouldn’t allow certain things for me (after the first two puberty movies about periods and passing out both times, my mom had enough and said no to that or called me out sick that day and also I didn’t need the scoliosis checks since I was under care already for that), so this may be why.
I got all my shots at my pediatrician’s since I would faint and she wanted to be there.

Re: Vaccine memory
I was born in the late 70s and I remember going on line in first grade for a shot. I don’t know what it was, but I do know it was the first time I got it in my arm. The reason I remember it was that my doctor would give me shots in the buttocks. I thought I was supposed to take my pants down and cried because I did not want to take off my pants in school in front of other kids. I felt happy that it was in my arm. When I told my mom the doctor did not have to give shots in my butt I recall her saying we could switch doctors.

Re: Vaccine memory
I was watching an episode of Dr. Oz a couple months ago and he had Dog the Bounty Hunter on. Dog was talking about how he was against the vaccine and then got COVID and was planning on getting the vaccine.
He also mentioned how as a little kid (he said in the 50s) his mom took him somewhere and there were long lines of kids waiting to get the polio vaccine. He said kids were dying from polio left and right when he was little so it was a big deal when the vaccine came out. He also said that his mom was Native American and was very torn on giving him the vaccine and he kept getting pulled off the line and then she would put him back in line and this went on for a bit. Ultimately he did get the polio vaccine.
I thought this was interesting and never heard anything like this before. Not sure if it would be the same if he was getting polio vaccine in line in the 50s. Thinking maybe in the 70s it was for measles maybe as that may have been the newer vaccine.

He never had Covid but said everyone immediately goes straight to that thinking when they get sick.

Oh he didn’t? I could’ve sworn he said that, but who knows? Maybe he said he thought he had it but never went to confirm it. I know he said he was very sick, sickest he has been in life.

He could have had it. He said he never got tested. Brilliant man.

However, Oz then followed his statement up by asking if he's been tested for COVID-19 since feeling sick, and Chapman responded with, "Well no, this is the second day I've felt good, but at the time it hit me, I couldn't go. I thought I was almost dying, I was saying my last prayers."

I had to fact-check. I was “doing my own research” as they say. Especially when I saw it was Dr. Oz who interviewed him. He’s a known quack in the medical community.

I don't have detailed information about Dog. LOL. I only shared what I saw on the episode of Dr. Oz and it was really in relation to vaccine memory (how the thread started).
Regarding Dr. Oz, I realize he is a celebrity now, but I have never heard of him as a quack in the medical community (both publicly and privately -I met someone who worked with him not so long ago on medical case at the hospital and said he really is a very good doctor and extremely thorough).

Maybe it's his politics that make him a quack? (disclaimer- i have no idea about his politics or what kind of dr he is, just a guess though with the way things are lately!)
