Vaccine Misconceptions?
Sorry to sound like a broken record adding to all of these COVID/vaccine posts - but something has been gnawing at me and I'm not sure if it's ME or what.
I got the vaccine because I wanted to avoid being hospitalized or getting really, really sick. I never thought that it would 100% prevent me from getting COVID. I also have an 82 year old mother who isn't vaccinated and a 9 year old who isn't vaccinated. I hope/d that with the vaccine, I won't be able to so easily spread it to them should I get it.
So I guess the question is - are there people who think that the vaccine could totally prevent them from getting COVID? Is that how it was "sold" to people. I don't get it.
And I also think that the more people vaccinated - the less this asshole virus has a chance to mutate. Am I wrong about that too?

I'm not 100% sure, but if vaccinated people can still get and spread Covid, I would guess it still has a chance to mutate- even if 100% of the world was vaccinated. But again, maybe that's wrong? If the vaccine stopped you from getting the illness- like a lot of other vaccines do- and from spreading the illness, then yes, that's probably correct This seems more like a flu shot- and look how many strains of flu we have...

Re: Vaccine Misconceptions?
When I got my vaccine it was being reported:
-The vaccines were 95% effective against getting COVID - They were 100% effective against hospitalizations and deaths - The viral load of a vaccinated person is so low that they probably can't even spread it - The vaccine was the way forward to end the restrictions including, and especially, masking everywhere.
I did my part. I don't regret it. I did it to eventually earn us all some freedom, and to protect the vulnerable in my circle. But literally none of the things I stated above still hold true.
And the idea that we can all get vaccinated and end mutations is a pipe dream at this point. It's out there and it's going to mutate over and over. The next mutation is probably already out there in India or Indonesia or wherever the current outbreaks are.

I definitely don't think it will prevent the virus completely, but I do hope that it will lessen the severity. Some protection is better than none.
I also agree - the more people vaxxed, the less it mutates, and it eventually becomes a minor virus.

I've been pro Vaccine and when I got it, my understanding was just as you describe. I am not sorry I got it, but I agree with your assessment.

My parents - and some people at work - ABSOLUTELY believe getting the vax means you cannot get it. Try to advise them otherwise and they yell and walk away.

The faster more people get vaccinated the less the virus has a chance to mutate. The more people travel, don’t wear n95 or equivalent masks, and don’t have a vaccine the faster it can mutate. There is a new strand coming from Chicago. There are new strands from South Africa.

Vaccine Misconceptions?
In the beginning, the CDC director said if you get the vaccine, you won’t get or spread Covid. That’s what the early data showed.

Good luck with that. At this point I think the fact that people who are vaccinated and are still getting it and spreading it will cause people to ask "what's the point". This is never going away

Yes, this has been my experience with people until recently. And honestly, the media and even their doctors led them to believe that in the beginning so you can’t even fault them. Many vaccinated I know said they feel they were lied to and wouldn’t have gotten the vaccine and won’t get a booster now. All the more reason as immunity is waning that they should be working on a better vaccine that targets new variants instead of just more of the same. Quantity doesn’t mean quality.

Exactly. You can push the vaccine narrative more effectively had the fully vaccinated people not be contracting and spreading COVID in larger than thought numbers. That ship has sailed; the vaccinated and unvaccinated alike are getting and spreading COVID. At what point does this end?
At this point lets acknowledge this is a virus that does what viruses do, mutates and spreads. Lets try to mitigate risk as much as we can in a global society however there has to be some risk acceptance. We will never get to 0 COVID cases especially not in the US.
ETA: Vaccine and mask mandates have not done the trick so why do we continue to impose them? If these mandates were effective we wouldn't be having these COVID rates and discussions right now...

Ding ding ding!!!! And the higher our vaccination rates climb, the higher the cases! And the media is hyping how given the surge more and more people are getting vaccinated as if that is because they have faith in the vaccine! Hello! If you mandate the vaccine and give people NO choice if they want to keep their job of course people are going to get the vaccine! Not because they want to! Let’s keep doing exactly what’s NOT working! It’s the very definition of insanity....keep the same plan and hope for different results.

Re: Vaccine Misconceptions?
I think a big problem with the statistics that were reported from the trials is that during the trials covid rates were extremely low, people were still social distancing, mask mandates were still in effect and businesses and schools had many restrictions. Of course when you remove all those other factors the efficacy will decline. This should have been common sense but that was not the narrative they needed to present.
Also, for the love of God, unless we close our borders the virus is going to continue to rage and mutate throughout the world. Why people fail to see that is beyond me. Stop thinking if the population of NY is fully vaccinated that it’s going to mean sh*t for the virus.

My mom too said she is not planning to get it either. So will all the attacking of the unvaccinated stop since more and more will not get a third shot or continue every year like they planned everyone would?

Funny how we are supposed to praise these highly educated people too making the rules. Once again you can’t be both highly intelligent AND have full common sense.

Seriously, Because it’s easy to put blame then question if the vaccine you got is really going to do everything they said it would. I swear egos are the problem and why the experts are not looking at the right things to fix.
They should never have started lifting masks mandates and giving out all this freedom until they had more data.

Re: Vaccine Misconceptions?
I agree that the fireworks were a little premature. For a good 2 months it felt so nice to feel normal and safe again.
This is a new virus that is changing. It's not ideal that we have to learn on the fly but it's the only thing we can do.
With regards to the vaccine it looks like immunity wears off over time. I'll definitely be getting whatever subsequent shots they suggest. If it offers me any added protection from being hospitalized I think its worth it. I'll also be returning to regular mask wearing in public. We see how the delta variant is spreading in other places, Florida etc. I think its only a matter of time before we see infections go way up here too.
