Vaccine spin off - updated
Regarding a potential Covid vaccine - every person I’ve spoken to about it says they won’t get it. (Which is also my stance.) I don’t have a huge circle or anything  but literally don’t know one person who plans to get it. So unless it’s mandated, how is this vaccine going to suddenly allow us to go back to normal? Especially if it’s only like 50% effective - maybe less? (I think Fauci said the other day that it might be approx 50% effective, but don’t quote me on that.) I’ve just never understood this. Would it give us a bump towards achieving herd immunity, even if relatively few people get it- is that the goal? I just can’t help feeling like life is hinging on this vaccine that may not be very effective that no one will get anyway!

And as an aside- an interesting blast from the past- check out the related thread below in regards to a Swine Flu Vaccine in 2009.
Seems like people were against that one as well!

Yes. I understand how the vaccine approval process works and have the ability to access and interpret the safety data.
I don’t think anyone can or should decide what they will do until they look at the data themselves. It would be foolish of anyone to refuse a vaccine without first learning whether or not their concerns have any scientific basis.

I'll get it eventually - after it's been proven effective and safe over time. Rushing it through to be "ready" at the end of the year just isn't enough time for me.

Does anyone know whether swine flu was just added into the regular flu vaccine as a strain after the strain was isolated? If so, did that make the regular flu shot, which always has different strains, new? How long does the shot have to be available before people don't think it's new? Do we even know how long adverse health effects would take to show up if there were any?

If a covid vaccine comes out, I will be one of the first ones volunteering for it.
I am sad that the anti-vaxx movement in this country is so pervasive, I think the technology has improved leaps and bounds in recent years that its silly to compare the vaccine safety rollout procedures to those 30-50 years ago when the tech wasn't there. I trust in the systems in place now that are aiding researchers and scientists to study all the possible negative effects of potential vaccines and I doubt any local or state government will be entrusting the health of their citizens to mandate a vaccine if its not proven to be safe and effective. So yes, sign me up!

Oh just to be clear, I’m not afraid of the vaccine’s safety, and I’m not even sure if that’s the reason so many people seemingly don’t plan to get it.
Mostly I was just wondering how many people have to get it, and how effective it has to be, in order for it to make a big enough difference such that normal life can resume, you know? We’re all waiting on it but what if very few people get it?

Yes I believe it’s included in the standard quadrivalent flu shot.

Thanks. You're also asking great questions. If that's the case, did lots of people not get the flu shot because of the new component? Genuinely interested. I am trying to figure out when and how a newly isolated virus vaccine goes from being too new to old enough.

I am thinking the same thing - nobody i know is planning on getting the vaccine right away.
I did get the swine flu vaccine on a stand alone basis - I was 8months pregnant, commuting into the city, and so torn but did it.

I will be getting it. I have been following the data with each phase. People keep saying it’s being rushed, but it’s going through the same testing as all other vaccines just on a larger scale.
I think many people hear someone else is nervous to get the vaccine and then think they should be nervous as well. This statement perfectly describes my sister. I am trying to now provide her with actual data to encourage her to get the vaccine when it comes out.

It probably won't be federally mandated, but it will be required for certain things, as someone said above, possibly for students. Hospitals require their employees to get flu vaccines ( if not you have to wear a mask when you are around other people), so they will probably require this as well.
I would imagine it would be available first to health care workers other high risk people first. There probably won't be enough for the whole country immediately, so people on the fence will have a little more time to get used to the idea.

My first instinct is not to get it. I am not so inclined to get the flu shot either. Something that affords only ~50% immunity against a *mostly* benign virus isn't worth injecting into me.
That being said, it isn't a hard no. I would definitely do my due diligence and research first. I worry that it will be mandated for kids to go to school, and that seems unconstitutional.

They'll probably be a black market for fake papers if that is the case.

So you renew your license what, every 5 years? So you'd only have to get the flu shot when you needed to renew a licence?
Doesn't seem to be very effective.
But then again, neither is the flu shot so.....

Once every 8 years I think. Licenses are valid for a long time. There was a guy, a rep from LI I think (it's been a while since I looked into it so I don't recall his name) but he wanted the bill to include wording that would make it impossible to conduct any sort of state business without having immunization proof on file. So any DMV transaction, business licensing, taxes, etc. That was never added to the bill of course. I don't know how that would even be feasible. Some of the proposed bills on the NYS website really make me
