Re: Vegas to Grand Canyon

It depends on how much time you want to spend. I took tour where we took a bus to the Hoover Dam and then a small plane to the canyon It was great.

Re: Vegas to Grand Canyon

We did this in April with another couple..we decided to rent a car bc we THOUGHT it would be cheaper and liked the idea of driving through the desert.

When we got to the Canon....we still had to pay a lot for the tour to actually SEE it lol Chat Icon

We went to the part that is an Indian Reservation which is MUCH closer (although not as publicized bc the state doesn't make $$$...the state wont even pave the 30 mile road leading to it to discourage people fro going...so yes you drive on a dirt road for 30 miles (maybe more...)which was fun bc we rented an SUV)

We had a fun time and good laughs...but dollar for dollar the tour from Vegas is cheaper...although renting a car might be more fun.

We drove to Williams, AZ and then took a 2 hour train ride to the Canyon. I have two small boys who love trains so this was the motivating factor for us. I really enjoyed the train ride. You have about a 3 hour layover at the Grand Canyon. There is a free shuttle service operating that takes you around. We had enough time to eat lunch and go to gift shops. You go through the Hoover Dam on your way to the Canyon.

We did a helicopter trip from the strip to the Grand Canyon, it was expensive, but we had limited time and it was completely amazing. We went with a company called Maverick. Fantastic!!!

We took a tour to the Canyon on a bus. I don't remember the company name, but since the trip is about 5 hours each way, we liked being on a bus tour because we could relax and nap.

That said, we did have to be picked up at like 5am to get to the tour bus headquarters before we left. WAYYY early, lol. But we were back at the Strip by 9pm. They took us first to Hoover Dam and we got out, walked around, took pics. Then stopped somewhere to have lunch close to the Canyon, then the stop at the Grand Canyon and stayed there for a couple/few hours, then the drive straight back. TOTALLY worth it.

Re: Vegas to Grand Canyon

We rented a car - it was a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG drive - and IMO totally not worth the time it took away from my stay @ the Wynn !!! (but we were only in Vegas for 4 days and I'm not very 'outdoorsey'

I'd die if we were stuck on a tour w/ zero control over when we got there/back -

Re: Vegas to Grand Canyon

We did a bus tour. It's a long day, you leave at like 5am, because it's a good 4.5-5 hour trip to the Grand Canyon with stops for photo opps along the way. We spent about 1.5 hours at the Grand Canyon. We got back to Vegas about 8pm that night.

Defintely worth it, but it is an all day trip.

I highly recommend the company we used, it was a minibus tour and there were only a few of us which made it a nicer trip. It was called Adventure Photo Tours. We had more free time at the Canyon than the Greyhound type tour buses had.

Re: Vegas to Grand Canyon

No recs - I don't want to be a Debbie Downer but I was just going to say steer clear of the planes/copter tours but I see you stated that won't be an option. I know someone who was VERY badly injured in a helicopter crash while visiting the Grand Canyon. Her husband was killed in it. The company was totally negligent.

I know my sister went there and drove it - she said it was beautiful and really cool to see it. It's definitely something to see!

we rented a car and drove. We stopped at Hoover Dam and then it was about a 4hr drive to the Grand Canyon. DH hates tours, lol he like to be in control. I felt like we didn't see much, maybe a tour gives you more guidance.
