Vent-School snack suggestions
Vent-though I know some don't agree with me on this... the whole childhood obesity thing , and the crap our kids eat bothers me, and is something I try to improve on when feeding my kids ..Not on a high horse, my kid eats crap and more then enough of it, but when I know better, I do better. Today was his first day of PRESCHOOL and its a peanut free classroom and they gave out a list of appropriate 'snacks' without peanuts and the number ONE thing , the first thing on the list..was DOUBLE STUFF OREOS? I know, I know, I dont have to give it to him, don't get my panties in a bunch. I just think it is sad that this is what the preschool feels is an appropriate snack.
Who writes this list???
It was followed by Pringles, Skittles, Starburst. I kid you not. Fruit was on the second page, probably 150 suggestions down. I hate that others don't agree with me on this. That people think it is ok to send skittles in as a snack for a pre schooler. And again, dont flame me, my kid eats skittles, but as a snack?
I believe if you want change, you have to be it, so I will call and make a comment about it, and I know already I will be seen as the over the top mom.

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions
ok Oreos I can see...but skittles? Starbursts? Really!? DS gets his fair share of junk food. And, sometimes will even get an oreo for breakfast if I can't get him to eat anything else and I am trying to get out the door on time (don't flame, please). But, skittles? As a snack? I don't get that. As a treat...yes. DS gets them from time to time and also LOVES chocolate so I have a stash of it in the house. But I don't understand how that is considered a snack for preschool.

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions
Wow! Even when I was in school and everything was NOT so health conscious and all about childhood obesity, they never suggested those things! In fact, I dont' think we were allowed to bring in candy as a snack. It had to be something semi-healthy- fruit, cheese and crackers, pretzels etc. I'm really suprised!!

that's crazy!!! when ds was in pre-school, I sent him in with whole grain big bird crackers and I got a note home to please keep snacks healthy. I was because clearly she thought they were junk when they weren't. but wow, I would be annoyed at that list. yes, you can chooses not to sent them in, but now you're competing with other moms who do send them in and hoping that your kid doesn't ask you for it or doesn't get any from them kwim
as a teacher, who the hell wants a classroom of sugared up kids??

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions
My kid has never had a double stuff oreo. I wouldn't dream of sending her to school with that for a snack. I send fresh fruit. On days when I don't have fresh fruit I send applesauce. I have never, nor will I while she is under the age of 5 send CANDY as a snack.
You are not alone!!!

seriously! this is what else was on the list
Fritos, doritos, Bugles, Swedish Fish (??) . sweet tarts, OMG....LAFFY TAFFY , oh it just gets better..BUBBLE GUM. Krispy Creme doughtnuts, twinkies, ding dongs,
I get it...they were listing 'BRAND NAMES' that are safe but the first thing listed should have been..please send a healthy snack and on the second page is a list of brand names which are safe type of thing. On the second page in a small add on , it has addtional snack suggestions and lists fruit, bagels, etc.
In the grand scheme of things, not a huge deal, just wish as a SCHOOL they would take a larger step towards pushing healthy on our kids and not even SUGGEST this list. KWIM?

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions
I am generally pretty laid back about this stuff, but that list is crazy! First my 3.5yo is not allowed to have skittles or starbursts. I dont think its a good snack or treat for my DS. Its super bad for their teeth and seems like it may be somewhat of a choking hazard (maybe I am wrong on that though) Oreos dont bother me although I wonder why they chose Double Stuffed but really they should have listed healthy alternatives FIRST and the junk food after IMO!

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions
That's crazy! The place where Loey goes now said they will not serve any "sweets" besides like teddy grahams and animal crackers.
But having worked in a million preschools, it's crazy to see what the kids bring in for lunch sometimes! I've seen LOTS of the things that were on your list.
At such a young age, I can't imagine sending in those things though!

This list is crazy! Maybe they looked up allergy safe pre-packaged foods and just cut and pasted the list. Very careless! Actually, bizarre!

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions
I think that is ridiculous and I would be annoyed as well. I work in a school setting and am appalled at what some children eat at 9 or 10 am for snacks. I am sure you are not the only parent that finds the list of suggested snacks inappropriate

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions
That is the most oddest list of snacks for any age let alone preschool children.
My DS is 8 and he never has candy as a snack, rarely if ever actually will he have candy. How is that even a snack? Swedish fish?!?! Are they serious? Why not add a cup of sugar to the list as a snack also.

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions
I worked in a preschool/dc for years and the children were NOT allowed to bring in candy. I eat more than my fair of junk food ( ) but would send dd in with that stuff as a snack. She can have it under my watch when she' old enough. They weren't even allowed to bring stuff in with high fructose corn syrup, when that whole craze started.
That list is crazy and you should def. say something. Wheat, grains, fruits and veggies should be on the list and FIRST

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions
***?
that would not be cool with me. i am not thrilled with the items that are constantly served at our nursery school (some of which are the parents' doing), but that list from the school itself would freak me out. i'm the annoying mother who always brings the fruit, when it was bring-something-in-that's-orange day, i provided the carrots
DD#1 started kindergarten yesterday and we have been instructed to bring in a "healthy snack" and drink. a neighboring town sent home a noticed that the only things that were permitted were fruits and veggies . now while that is music to my ears, i think that restricting to just that is insane as well. some people just have no common sense be it the school and/or parents. i just do the best i can at home and leading by example...i don't try to go nuts either way...

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions
I cant imagine a school that would think those suggestions are ok! crazy! I am ok with an oreo/candy as a treat every once in a while but I would definitely NOT be cool with a school that suggests CANDY as an everyday snack! I would start to wonder what else about the school doesnt jibe with my parenting philosophy just based on how out-there that snack list is.

Wow! That IS INSANE! Who wrote that list is right!!!! Do parents supply snack for everyone? If so I'd be pizzed and I'd make arrangements to bring my childs own snack. That list is crazy and my DS eats candy and snack foods, but at 5 I don't give him skittles and starbursts.

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions
We got a suggested snack list from the Kindergarten teacher and it included fruit, cheese and crackers, veggies & dip, yogurt. The list you got really is crazy!
