that's crazy!!! when ds was in pre-school, I sent him in with whole grain big bird crackers and I got a note home to please keep snacks healthy. I was Chat Icon because clearly she thought they were junk when they weren't. but wow, I would be annoyed at that list. yes, you can chooses not to sent them in, but now you're competing with other moms who do send them in and hoping that your kid doesn't ask you for it or doesn't get any from them kwim

as a teacher, who the hell wants a classroom of sugared up kids??

seriously!
this is what else was on the list

Fritos, doritos, Bugles, Swedish Fish (??) . sweet tarts, OMG....LAFFY TAFFY , oh it just gets better..BUBBLE GUM. Krispy Creme doughtnuts, twinkies, ding dongs,

I get it...they were listing 'BRAND NAMES' that are safe but the first thing listed should have been..please send a healthy snack and on the second page is a list of brand names which are safe type of thing. On the second page in a small add on , it has addtional snack suggestions and lists fruit, bagels, etc.

In the grand scheme of things, not a huge deal, just wish as a SCHOOL they would take a larger step towards pushing healthy on our kids and not even SUGGEST this list. KWIM?

WHAT!!!! That is just CRAZY!

DD eats junk occasionally but like maybe Doritos or Pringles...a Chips Ahoy but not as a regular snack.

For her pre-K the asked us to send healthy snacks...fruit, cheese etc. That is just crazy. Who wants a class of 4 year olds hocked up on sugar...

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions

This sounds like someone did a Google search for peanut-free snacks and then just copied and pasted the list without really looking at it or thinking about it too much. I am sure you were not the only parent with this reaction.

My DS is allergic to peanuts, and eats oreos from time to time, but I'd never send that as an every day snack to preschool. And never any of that candy. There are plenty of healthier alternatives that don't have peanuts~

I would have thought this was some kind of joke! Really? Bubble Gum??
Bry is 4.5 years old and still has NOT tried a piece of gum! Not that I won't let him, just no interest!

Anyway, I send in:

Yogurt
Banana
Applesauce
Mandarin Oranges
Goldfish Crackers
Cheese It's
Graham Crackers
Cheese Cracker Sandwiches
Any one of the Dole fruit cups (I've been trying to by the packed in water OR 100% juice ones)

And yes, I do throw in 2 cookies. Usually chips ahoy or Oreos (Not double Stuff).

Wow! I just can't get over that list!Chat Icon

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions

Are you sure this was the SNACK list and not the list of acceptable treats to send it at holidays etc. I know its still bad and I posted a similar post last year when DD started Pre K but I do recall the stuff you listed above was on the occasional treats list.

I do think the system is screwed up though. All this talk about childhood obesity and at my DD's Pre K class last year all of the snacks provided by the school were pre packaged, high in fat, sodium, nasty stuff etc etc. I know they have a budget and bad stuff costs less usually plus its easier to hand out a ding ding that to wash and hand out apples to 20 kids but still it has to start somewhere. I provided my DD's snack for the year so I ahd control over what she ate. This year she is in kindergarten and I get to provide snack and lunch for her and I am relieved.

bananas & wheat germ
ants on a log (can't do it anymore due to peanut allergies...but at least it was an attempt at health.

It says Peanut free Snack List and a list.

I do think someone copied and pasted it from a site somewhere with brand names. That makes sense ( although it is still kinda stupid as very un age specific )

ETA- now I am re looking over all the addtional papers with it, and Even there...there are websites listed for info on peanut allergies on a seperate sheet and they are not 'parent' , even 'consumer' driven or related, they give examples for teachers of what to do , just something weird to hand to a parent.

Sounds like someone copied and pasted a lot.

Wow really? That is bad. Okay an oreo for a child with allergies for something like a special day or birthday party - but as a regular snack?

Our school doesn't necessarily suggest the healthiest things but they aren't as bad as that. They recommend - fruit, cheese and crackers, pretzels, graham crackers, goldfish, etc.

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions

That list sounds absolutely disgusting! I would bring it up to the director! All those things are TREATS, NOT SNACKS!!! Ask her what she thinks will happen tot he teacher when a class of 20 four-year-olds ODs on double-stuffed oreas and skittles! Chat Icon

Snacks are things that sustain energy, not things that cause sugar rush! Chat Icon

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions

That's unbelievable! Some of those snacks are not only unhealthy, but also potential choking hazzards. It was very irrresponsible of the school to send that home. Also as I teacher, there is no way I would want my kids eating any of those snacks everyday. They'd be off the wall.

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions

Landon's school is Kosher, and oreos are one of the big snacks at their school since they are kosher. Every day he tells me he had pretzels and an oreo for snack.
This year I heard they are having parents tke turns bringing snacks in... I will be bringing fruit every time. Chat Icon

Vent-though I know some don't agree with me on this... the whole childhood obesity thing , and the crap our kids eat bothers me, and is something I try to improve on when feeding my kids ..Not on a high horse, my kid eats crap and more then enough of it, but when I know better, I do better. Today was his first day of PRESCHOOL and its a peanut free classroom and they gave out a list of appropriate 'snacks' without peanuts and the number ONE thing , the first thing on the list..was DOUBLE STUFF OREOS? I know, I know, I dont have to give it to him, don't get my panties in a bunch. I just think it is sad that this is what the preschool feels is an appropriate snack.

Who writes this list???

It was followed by Pringles, Skittles, Starburst. I kid you not. Fruit was on the second page, probably 150 suggestions down. I hate that others don't agree with me on this. That people think it is ok to send skittles in as a snack for a pre schooler. And again, dont flame me, my kid eats skittles, but as a snack?

I believe if you want change, you have to be it, so I will call and make a comment about it, and I know already I will be seen as the over the top mom.

I really cant even believe that snack list, I wouldnt be able to control myself I would have to say something to the director.

I would bring this to the attention of the director (who probably already knows). I think it is important they realize that they look like idiots.

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions

That's insane.

In Ds's daycare we are only allowed to send a healthy snack. I sent a cookie once and it got sent back.

I used to send cheese sticks, etc.

Now it HAS to be fruit. We are allowed fruit cups or applesauce.. but, fruit. That's it.

I think that's a bit nuts. I used to send yougurt, cheese, fruit, etc.. .

I think sending fresh fruit everyday NOW is okay but, in the winter it is limiting. Apples.. Fine.. but, My SIL and I have apple allergies and DS is following suit because he gets the run everytime he drinks apples juice. So I limit apples.

Did I mention that Blueberries and grapes are forbidden/Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

eta: they provide one snack a day (wheat thins or goldfish usually) and a really healthy lunch, including salad. Apparently he eats it. I have my doubts because he doesn't eat it at home..

But, I am still Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon At the list they sent you home with!!!

Candy is NOT a snack!!!! I would consider speaking to someone in charge and suggesting a healthier list of appropriate snack items.

Re: Vent-School snack suggestions

I'm not on a healthy food high-horse either but I would be embarrased if I sent my child in with a snack that consisted of candy.

As a matter of fact, when I do send a snack in to school I always make sure it is healthy so they don't think that I feed the kid junk...self conscious I suppose since I am overweight and I feel like people just assume I eat junk all day in massive doses and that I feed my kids the same way.
