Re: vent -- UPDATED 2/8/06

i thought so too, thats why i first went to them. they made me come in for 2 appts to go over the medical and apply adn work out #'s before they would even give me an appt to see the dr. i was already 3 months and 1 week before anyone would see me!

i think it is just soo awful to turn people away like that! i mean, i dont care about myself but take care of my little guy! so as of right now i have no appts made until i know if we're covered. i haven't begun to look anywhere else yet until i know for sure. this is soo overwelming

I am SO sorry to hear this is happening to you, but I was also going to suggest getting P/T work at Starbucks. By the time you deliver, you'd have your benefits. I know it's not ideal, but at least you could make a little money AND get the benefits with only P/T work. Good luck and I really hope everything works outChat Icon

I would fllow thorugh iwth the PCAP, you need prenatal care. If you have to go to your local ER. You know if you have cramps or something like dizziness Chat Icon They can not turn you away because of insurance. Then if they have a clinic they will make you a follow-up appt. I work at a hospital and many women get into the clinic through the ER. The OB social workers are great!

I was going to suggest an ER as well. Is there anyway you can get your old job back? Even if you hate it insurance is more important right now...or what about COBRA from your old job? THat must be legally offered to you.

Would they hire me knowing i'm 5 months preg? And I don't know if insurance would cover me, don't you have to be w/ a company for like 90 days or something BEFORE you get preg?

I just want to add in here for a minute..I want to start off by saying that I think it is disgusting that the government that her husband so proudly served is treating him and his family this way, I totally agree that she should get coverage. It makes me sick that people come over here illegally and get whatever medical coverage and financial help they need, but taxpaying Americans suffer.

I work in an ER, and I dont think this is a good idea. First off, although they cannot turn her away for inability to pay, that does NOT mean that they cant bill her. The average ER visit without any blood work/testing is at least $500. Now add the sono, bloodwork and OB consult that she will get and we are into the thousands that she will be responsible for. The last thing this poor girl needs are these type of bills. The purpose of the ER is to rule out anything dangerous. They will do what is needed to determine that mom and baby are OK, and that is it. They will not run the testing that they would at an OB office for a prenatal visit, since they are not urgent tests. Even if she says she has some sort of symptom, they dont even have to determine what it is, just that it is not a threat to her or baby. Secondly, even though they can refer her to the clinic, the clinics are not free. If she does not have insurance they wont see her there either, but they may have some kind of sliding scale payment thing, some clinics do.

My heart goes out to the OP and I will pray that she gets the help that she deserves. I will try to find out at work any information that I can that would be able to help.

Re: vent -UPDATED 2/8/06- UPDATED AGAIN! 2/9/06 AT BOTTOM

I followed up w/ Social Services this morning and they denied us, yet again, b/c we are over their salary cap by $206!!! I don't work, it's just my husband and we all know the gov't/Air Force doesn't pay well.

This leaves me nowhere! I thought my only option would be to go to an ER, but one of my friends just did that, she is a single mother to be, no insurance, and was having very bad cramps so she went. They treated her but sent her a bill for $12000! I thought when the time comes I can go to an ER to deliver but my bill would probably be double that!

If you have any suggestions I woudl be more than happy to hear them. I just don't know where to turn anymore.

I checked into Healthy NY, the monthly fee I'm sure would be cheaper than anything else right now, provided they accept us. Does anyone know if they accept someone who is 5 months preg? I'm not sure if that's considered a 'pre-existing condition'. I'll call or am actually thinking of going right to one of the offices tomrorow.

Any help is appreciated!!!!

What about Child Health Care Plus? I mean, I know you're pregnant, but technically, couldn't you get this health care for your child, even though it is unborn. I am going to look on their website.

Here's a link to the Healthy NY eligibility page

If you look further down, there is a grid that says what your income must be under. It says pregnant women count as 2 people, so it seems they will take you already pregnant.

Good luck!

Can you make an appointment at a hospital OB clinic as an out patient. Pay on a sliding scale, I think once you get hooked up with an OB social worker they will help you.

Sometime with Medicaid if you are over the limit they can give it to you with a "spendown". basically you will have to pay the first say $200 of your medical care each month and then your medicaid will kick in. You should ask about that

I have Tricare benefits since my husband is Active Duty USAF. Once your husband puts you in DEERS you are covered 100% on Standard where you have a copay but not for maternity and you can switch to Prime (no copays) which is what I used thru my pregnancy.
I don't understand why you aren't covered by Tricare??

I am so sorry your going through this.
Why cant your Obgyn still see you if you are willing to pay out of pocket. UNtil you figure things out I am very surprised you were turned away.
I would place a call to have the doctor himself call you back. Explain you are trying to work out your insurance situation but you are desperate to be seen for a follow-up and are willing to pay the 100 dollars to be seen this time...
Im pretty sure they will take your money.
Then at least you have peace of mind that you are ok until you can work this out..

I just wanted to let you know PREGNANCY is never considered a PREEXSISTING condition....

My mom works for an ins. company.....and said that there not allowed to consider it that!

This is what I thought too. So, if you can get a job that offers benefits, they have to cover you and the baby.

I switched to DH's insurance after we got married when I was almost 3 months along. My entire family insisted I wouldn't be covered because it's a "pre-existing" condition, but I never had a single problem with the switch. Only thing I had to do was give my OB the new info.

He's not active duty, he works at the base mon-fri as a gov't tech, and then fulfills his military service (Air National Guard, actually) monthly. Even as a gov't tech, he should get it, but in an effort to save the base $$, they knocked half of the guys there down to a 'temp tech' status, even though they still work full time. It doesn't sound legal to me, I don't know how they get away w/ it.

When I was first applying at Planned Parenthood, I asked what happens if I don't qualify, do I just pay to be seen? And they told me they don't work that way at all, it's be seen w/ coverage or go somewhere else!!! BUT when I looked on their website, it says no one can be turned away due to color, race, sexual orientation and INCOME!!! What liars!!!

Since speaking to social services and getting no wher,e I called Stony Brook Hospital direct to see if there was something that could be done. I spoke to a nice woman who took my info for Family Health Plus. I am just waiting on a rep to call me back. She said it is for people who do'nt qualify for Medicaid, so hopefully this will work. I"ll keep you informed. Thanks for all your input!
