Verizon to end unlimited data for upgraders

http://money.cnn.com/2012/05/16/technology/verizon-unlimited-data-plan/index.htm?hpt=hp_t2

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Verizon Wireless is planning this summer to begin forcing smartphone customers with unlimited data plans to switch to tiered plans when they upgrade, the company's chief financial officer told Wall Street analysts on Wednesday.

At the JP Morgan Technology, Media and Telecom conference in Boston, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said the company will unveil a "data share" pricing model by mid-summer, which will give customers the ability to buy an allotment of data that can be used across multiple devices linked to the same account.

As that plan rolls out, Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500) will discontinue its practice of allowing customers who have legacy unlimited data plans to keep those plans when they buy a new smartphone. Verizon stopped allowing new customers to buy unlimited data plans a year ago.

"As you come through an upgrade cycle and you upgrade in the future, you will have to go onto the data share plan," Shammo said, "[We're] moving away from, if you will, the unlimited world and moving everybody into a tiered structure data share-type plan."

Someone's gotta pay for this....
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/story/2012-03-20/verizon-ceo-pay/53668062/1
NEW YORK – Despite retiring as CEO of Verizon in August, Ivan Seidenberg earned more in 2011 than he did in the last two full years of work.

According to an analysis of a Monday regulatory filing from the New York-based phone company, Seidenberg earned $26.4 million in 2011. That compares with the $18.1 million he earned in 2010 and the $17.5 million he received in 2009.

...
Seidenberg was the highest-paid CEO in the U.S. telecommunications industry last year. Randall Stephenson, his counterpart at AT&T, which is larger, earned $18.7 million.

Seidenberg's successor, Lowell McAdam, earned $23 million in 2011. That was in large part due to a special grant of $10 million in restricted stock, made when he assumed the CEO role.

Re: Verizon to end unlimited data for upgraders

For some reason this doesn't bother me that much at all. I have the old unlimited data plan for $30 a month. But even if I was switched over to a current data plan, I would still not come close to reaching the data limit.

I am on my phone ALL the time using the data and I barely approach 1 or 1.5 gbs. I'm sure most people are the same if they check their monthly data.

Doesn't bother me ... I got my iPhone 4 (not 4S) before they stopped the unlimited data and I have no need to upgrade.

I think a lot of people will be bothered when it comes time for them to upgrade. The plan that they will have to change to is going to make their monthly charges more expensive.

Right now you pay $30 for unlimited data. The new plans cost the same $30 for only 2 GB of data. For many customers that isn't going to be enough. Even if you want to bump up to 5 GB to be safe, you are now paying $50 per month for that.

This article gives a good description of data usage per month, what will increase the usage, and what most people use.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/249532/smartphone_data_shakeup_the_end_of_unlimited.html

Using the data measurement tools available in Android 4.0, a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), I carefully tracked the amount of mobile data consumed by a variety of common smartphone tasks.

First, I tracked my total data usage over a full day in which I engaged in relatively heavy Web browsing and social network activity, along with regular email usage and RSS-based feed reading. All of that combined -- and also factoring in any incidental data consumption throughout the day, such as app updates (there was one) and the few kilobytes used here and there by the operating system and random applications -- resulted in a grand total of 30MB of data transferred for the day. That kind of usage would add up to a month-long total of just 900MB -- not even a full gigabyte -- if it stayed consistent over the course of 30 days.

Of course, we use our smartphones for more than just basic browsing. So I also measured the amount of data used in an hour of high-quality music streaming via Pandora. That burned up about 32MB of mobile data -- meaning that, if you streamed a full hour of high-quality music and engaged in heavy Web and social network usage every single day, you'd still be under 2GB for the month.

The activity that consumed the most data in my tests, not surprisingly, was video streaming. Viewing 10 YouTube videos -- a random mix of clips averaging about 3.5 minutes in length, half of them HD and half standard quality -- sucked down a full 125MB of data. So, yeah, if you did that every day, you'd be looking at around 3.7GB of usage for the month.

I do not have a data plan but when our contract is up with Verizon we are switching to boost mobile, getting better phones, and unlimited everything $90 a month for both of us. We are getting ripped off right now for basic phones with no email or web or anything

UGH! They just keep screwing over their long time customers. First, they got rid of New Every Two, and now we are forced to pay more for data. I really have no idea how much data I use each month, and I like not having to worry about it. Thankfully, DH and I upgraded our phones in February, before this started, so I don't have to worry about this for a couple of years.

They already did this to DH when he upgraded to the iPhone in March.

Re: Verizon to end unlimited data for upgraders

I am one of the few who plans to downgrade their phone. I hate having a smartphone (BB) and feel its a waste of $$$. I know iphones and droids are awesome but the idea of saving that $ is more important to me than their technological ability. With that said, I was annoyed at latching onto my father's plan for just $10 a month w/a basic phone and losing my unlimited data. Now Verizon is making that decision easy for me. I agree w/everyone else that is fed up w/Verizon's rising prices and lack of customer loyalty. We need our phones and it is disgusting that these company's (pardon my expression) are making us bend over for it.

Re: Verizon to end unlimited data for upgraders

Think about it...most people don't know how much data they use. They are comforted by the unlimited plan. They can use whatever they want and not have to worry about it.

Now imagine telling a lot of these customers when they go to upgrade that they can't have unlimited anymore. And that the same $30 will only get thenm 2 GB of data. I would imagine that many of these customers are going to be afraid that 2 GB won't be enough. So they will be talked into the 5 GB plan that now costs $50 per month.

Verizon has something like 90 million customers. Imagine if even 1 MILLION of those customers got talked into the $50 5 GB plan to be safe. That's $20 MILLION dollars Verizon is going to make from their customers by doing absolutely NOTHING! (and I am seriously underestimating the number of customers who will actually have to switch to the $50 plan)

Hey, they need to pay that CEO of theirs somehow... by squeezing every dime from their customers. Chat Icon

Re: Verizon to end unlimited data for upgraders

DH and I hsare a family plan with verizon. he used to have Sprint and I have always had Verizon.
I know overall, Verizon has better reception in some areas but I knew they were rolling this plan out from months ago.
I was so happy thinking that our contract was over in October, but i checked like a month ago and only DH is eligible in October to upgrade. I'm not due to expire until Feb 2013 Chat Icon

We have already discussed this and we will be switching to Sprint come Feb. At least (for now) they still offer unlimited data plans - although that will probably change as they jump onto the pay-per-data-plans bandwagon.

the new every two still exists. it may not be called the same thing, but you are still eligible for an upgrade every 2 years regardless, unless you signed up for a 1 year contract

Right, but for my more recent upgrade, instead of the $100 credit toward a new phone that I had in the past, they gave me a $30 credit. Phones are a lot more expensive now too, so it hurts!
