there is NO way i would have gotten close enough to that thing to take a pic ... with a RULER, no less!
i think i would have slept in a hotel & called an exterminator in the morning

OMFG YES it's dead.
I was rounding the corner to go down to the playroom when my eyes locked onto it. Before I could scream, DH SHOUTED, "Don't come down here!!!!"
I whispered, "Please tell me I am not seeing that! Is that a fecking SPIDER <stage whisper>?!"
To which he replied, "Um, I think it's a dog..."
He sprayed it with something toxic and it RAN at DH to which he actually SHRIEKED. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Thankfully, after a long battle, DH prevailed.
I HAD to get a pic to compare it to other pics- I NEEDED to know what it is. It's a Wolf Spider. We've had them before, but NONE this size.
USUALLY DH just picks up the spiders I scream about and put them in the garden, however we were afraid this one might terrorize the neighborhood.
ETA: This pic still doesn't do it justice as it's soaked with bug killer. When it was "fuzzy" it was EASILY 4 inches around.

I'm sorry... I know I would have been absolutely terrified too... but this is the first time I've ever read ANY post on this board that actually made me The way you described that had me shaking. I'm so glad you didn't let it terrorize the neighborhood. You're a good citizen!

It's a Wolf spider. Once we were sure it was good and dead, I actually got a look at it's face. Wolf spiders have very distinct eye placement (which, you can see them SHINING in the pic).
The scary thing is- usually I'm home ALONE on Fridays. It's just dumb luck that he was off from work today.
