Does the crying stop as soon as he sees you or you pick him up? To me, that was always the #1 indication that she just wanted me to hold her. If it took me a while to calm her down, then I usually figured it was more than just wanting me to get her back to sleep.

The first time he wakes I give him a bottle b/c I know he is hungry. The second time last night I tried patting his butt and saying shhhh and he wouldn't have it so I picked him up and tried rocking him. He was crying and stiffening and throwing back his body but then about a minute later fell back asleep. The third time pretty much the same thing but when I put him back in the crib he woke up and was crying. I let him cry for about 10 minutes and took him out. It was a half hour before I had to get up so I just gave him a bottle. I did notice him shoving his fist in his mouth which I though ok maybe its his teeth but then he was fine after the bottle.

Sounds like a combination of things (hunger, gas, mommy hold me) so I can see why you are perplexed. These little ones are a mystery at times!
