Want to make a change in gun laws?
Don't just feel sad or angry about the Connecticutt shootings, do something to start changing things! WE have to make this country safer for our children, and it can be done, but only if politicians hear from us.
Australia had a horrendous mass shooting in the 90's where 35 people were killed. It decided as a nation that enough was enough and banned all assault rifles. It created a program that bought back 650,000 guns - about 1/5 of the nation's guns. It hasn't had a mass shooting since.
Take a look at Nickolas Kristoff's OpEd column on gun control in the NY Times this past Sunday: www.nytimes.com/2012/12/16/opinion/sunday/kristof-do-we-have-the-courage-to-stop-this.html?ref=nicholasdkristof&_r=0
Take action: Contact as many Senators and Congress members as you can and let them know how you feel about gun control and mental health services. The more they hear from us the better chance there is of getting something to happen.
Don't just contact your own district's people, reach out as far as possible to spread the message to other state's representatives that we, the American People, want something done.
It is especially important to contact Republican leaders in other states as they are often the ones obstructing gun control discussions - and I say this as a Republican who owns shotguns. The NRA has many of them in their pockets.

Contact as many as you can through their websites, which can be found by going to the sites listed above. Do a few at a time as you have time over the next week, but be sure to do it while the media still is running the shooting story. If you can't email them - some block emails from outside of their districts, see if they might have a facebook page to leave messages, not all have them. I've found that many have twitter accounts, send them a tweet too.
I watch TV news with my phone on twitter and send tweets to whoever gets interviewed or mentioned, and to whatever show I'm watching. I search for names as soon as they are identified and sent them a tweet about gun control which I keep copied and ready to paste on every message. It's very easy.

Re: Want to make a change in gun laws?
That is my first concern, is that politicians start thinking as human beings FIRST and tell the NRA and the stranglehold they have on OUR government where to shove it.

You are right, and I signed it yesterday after Anonymous posted it on Twitter. There were about 19,000 signatures at that point.
I have been involved in politics for years. I know how it works. Please believe me when I say that contacting the offices of our Senators and Congress people will do far more good than signing facebook petitions.
When their staff members start telling them that they are hearing from people, they know that for every contact their office gets at least ten other people feel the same way but didn't make the effort to call or write. They pay attention to direct contacts.

Re: Want to make a change in gun laws?
NYT Article on New and Renewed Support for Gun Control Law Changes
Includes "Mr. Manchin, a Democrat and an avid hunter with an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association, indicated that he supported re-evaluating laws that permit people to have clips that hold dozens of rounds of ammunition and to own assault rifles."
