Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

That story yesterday of the man that followed the GPS directions right into an oncoming train got me thinking.

My GPS was never wrong. So far (knock wood)Chat Icon

Well, this isn't so bad BUT when I was coming home from the Bronx Zoo it couldn't tell if I was ON the highway or ON the service road. We drove in three big circles before we realized that we were supposed to be getting ON the highway. Chat Icon

Didn't hear the story you are talking about - but I would think that if your GPS is telling you to turn onto something and it is railroad tracks - common sense should kick in Chat Icon

Mine hasn't been wrong

Mine took me some strange place in Stonybrook on night. I was going to a sleep study thing and got completly lost. I eventually found the street without the help of Lola (the GPS).

yes - but it is our own fault - we haven't updated the map in a year.....

it said that there was a wawa (a 7-11 basically) in some dark field that there wasn't....

Re: Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

My GPS actually failed on Saturday it was the first time that ever happened. I realized that the problem was that even if you select the right zip code if you select the city name vs the town name it will be wrong. We drove 30 minutes farther then we had toChat Icon

Re: Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

It hasn't been 'wrong' but it has taken me some pretty indirect routes to get where I want to go.

yes 2x's so far.

Once it kept telling me to go down a 1 way street in NYC

2nd time it told me an address was in the woods on the south service rd of the LIE but it was actually a real place on the north side. (i think it had something to do with the way things were #'ed)

Re: Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

Mines lead me down a dead end (the mp showed a continuing street)

Also, some POI aren't where the GPS tells me they are...they're like 1-2 blocks further lol

Re: Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

We don't have GPS but, one time a car service picked me up for a business trip and it was totally wrong.

Also - one time my friend was meeting us in Virginia at a restaurant in the mall and it was totally wrong as well (and she listened to it even though she was familiar with the mall!)

ETA - I read about the story you are talking about - it scares me that people are so distracted by GPS that they turn onto the train tracks. Supposedly, this wasn't the first time!

Re: Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

There are some streets near my house that are supposed to continue through to the next block, but for some reason, were never paved. You can't drive on them, but according to official records, they are supposed to be passable. In those cases, all the maps are wrong (Google, GPSs, Mapquest, etc).

I've also had a few houses that were either across the street, or a few doors down from where the GPS said. It got me to the right street, so I can read the mailbox numbers from there.... Chat Icon

My GPS can't pronounce my name, though.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

that guy is a moron. First, even if you drove over RR tracks, your car stalled. It's not the GPS's fault that the car stalled.

There is some disclaimer on those GPS units anyway. Nothing is 100%.

I've had GPS give me wrong directions, but you figure it out.

Re: Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

My GPS has not led me wrong yet. I love it so much, I'm mad it took me so long to get one. However, I'M still the driver and have to use common sense.

Re: Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

actually whenever i am in lower manhattan my gps goes all crazy, if i am on water st, it thinks i am in the water literally - the gps has the little car driving over water, but lower manhattan is the only place, it is constantly rerouting itself, good think i basically know my way around there

Re: Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

I had a client meeting me at the Workers' Comp. Board on Route 111/Wheeler Road. It's so easy to find that place and I gave directions. I bet more than half the people reading this just know the building without directions. They used the GPS and got some strange directions. They were late for their hearing. Now I explain to my clients why I give them directions.

Re: Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

Yes, a few times it gets confused and just says turn left when it should be right, etc. I have only seen it a few times though.

Re: Was your GPS ever totally wrong?

yes, twice, the first it say to keep going straight but it was a dead end street and second time when we where coming from Ny to FL it send us to the wrong side of the city (our condo is new and the street does not "exist" in the GPS)
