Re: Washing machine died- Need new one
I just had this issue last month. I had a Kenmore front loader that we bought in January 2009. It broke last month, right before I was to leave on vacation to Aruba, which was SO annoying.
The main computer panel broke on the machine, and Sears customer service was AWFUL, to put it mildly. I had called Universe to fix it, but because it was a Kenmore machine, they could get limited tech support. I had to deal with Sears. Turns out it was cost prohibitive to fix it.
Anyway, DH and I did some research and shopped around. We were told that front loaders only have a life expectancy of about 5 years. Apparently, all of the bells and whistles on the higher end machines make them more likely to break. So I wound up choosing a simpler top loading model. GE. We got it at Jay's in Levittown. Customer service was great, pricing was competitive. I preferred dealing with the smaller business as opposed to a huge company (after struggling with Sears for weeks).
Coincidentally, my dishwasher broke a couple of weeks ago, and we went back to Jay's and had another good experience. I appreciate that the people we dealt with were honest and don't try to upsell. For example, we mentioned that we are looking to renovate our kitchen in a few years so we didn't want a top of the line dishwasher (b/c we will be looking to rip everything out when we renovate). So the salesperson didn't even try to sell us the extended warranty... he said it wouldn't be worth it for us.
They say things happen in 3s, my CAC broke during the July heatwave, the washer in Oct., and dishwasher this month. I really, really hope that's it!!!

I have the Samsung top loaders. Largest size on the market. The washer is like 5.2cft or something like that. I can fit a ton in them! Love them.

Washing machine died- Need new one
All the new washers have "steam" cleaning. Is this a gimmick??
And, asking for an opinion. The dryer I have now works fine. But the dial that chosses "regular", "timed" etc has never worked properly. (same thing for my washer). Is it worth it to just buy a new washer and dryer knowing the dryer MIGHT crap out before the new washer? But certainly because the dial suks and never worked right?

I got the one it's paired with (7.4 cu ft.). Only thing I'm not a fan of is that the dryer detects the humidity level and shuts off if it thinks the clothes are dry, which isn't always the case. So you really need to use the timed dry cycles instead of the preset ones, especially on larger loads.

Washing machine died- Need new one
I'm looking at the Whirlpool Duet and Samsung. Both on Black tag at PC Richards....ugh. I need to do this tonight.
If anyone else has idea or advice let me know.
I have an LG now. Both the washer and dryer worked fine, but the dials never worked properly. (They came with the house). And after the utter fail from the other night I am soured on them.

Re: Washing machine died- Need new one
We had a whirlpool front loading machine which stopped working after only 2 years. I'm not sure of the exact model but they wanted $375 to fix it which wasn't worth it to us. I have a Bosch front loading machine now that we really like.
