Water when dog is in crate?

New dog owner here. This is probably a stupid question, but when leaving a dog in a crate, how does it get drinking water? I feel like if I leave the bowl in the crate, I'll come home to a very wet crate/crate mat/dog. HELP!

Re: Water when dog is in crate?

When we crated our dogs, we bought a bowl in petco that attaches to the side of the crate so it can't spill. But you do have to keep in mind, how much water they will drink and how long you will be gone, kwim?

We always left water in the crate. We never had any issue with peeing in the crate. Crate training is actually used as part of housebreaking your dog-dogs do not like to potty where they sleep. Make sure your dog gets walked enough--puppies should be left crated for one hour for every month old they are with a max time of 7-8 hours.

You can buy a water bowl or pail that hooks to the side of the crate so that your dog can have water at all time. They have ones on amazon that you can hook onto the inside of the crate. If it is for a short amount of time then you can skip the water.

Definitely buy a water bowl or pail that hooks to the side of the crate so that your dog can have water at all time. They have them listed on amazon as "ProSelect Stainless Steel Flat Sided Pail" that you can hook onto the inside of the crate. - Elizabeth

Call me a nervous mom but i would be afraid my dog's head or neck would get stuck in this pail's handle (depending on size of dog and handle that is). Chat Icon

This is a link to the exact one we used. Works great but obviously only for puppies or smaller dogs or dogs who won't be left alone that long.

No... We never put water in crate. We were told not to, because they will urinate in there and you don't want them to get in habit of urinating where they sleep.

Water when dog is in crate?

We have one that attaches to the side.

She has never urinated or pooped in the crate, but I swear she can go a good 10 hours without going out.

Re: Water when dog is in crate?

No water inside the crate if you are crating for training purposes.

A puppy can stay inside the crate without being taken out to make for as many hours as it's age. 3 months = 3 hours, etc. It's hard for a dog that small to hold it that long. Especially if you are giving water inside the crate. They will pee all over the place. Also make sure your crate has a divider to make the side your pup is on small enough where he/she won't pee in there. It's tough at first, but once you train them, you will have a great dog for life.

If you have a young puppy and you won't be home for 7-8 hours and you don't have anyone who can let the dog out 1-2x while you are at work, do not crate him/her. You should buy one of those play pens. One side has weewee pad and water and toys on the other side. They need the room to roam.

Over night is easier bc you just judge it on whoever goes to bed the latest makes the dog do it's business, then crate them and then whoever is up earliest takes the dog out to go again. You can also crate during the weekend when you are home to teach them to hold it.

Thanks for all the feedback! The dog is already housebroken and has never had an accident inside the house. We are using the crate for when we are at work, as the dog had a couch chewing incident, and we aren't sure he can have the run of the house yet.

Even in this case, don't leave water in the crate. How long are you gone all day? You may want to try gating the dog in the kitchen while you are gone. Just so it's not in the crate for 8+ hours.

Yes the amazon water pail is better for larger dogs. The petco crock also works well. If your dog is not going to be in the crate for a long time you may be able to skip the water. Also, if the crate is the right size for your dog they should not urinate inside the crate. That usually happens only when the crate is too big.

When we were crate training our pup, we didn't put any water in there. We had a dog walker that came, took him out for a walk, gave him water, etc. while we were at work.
