We are getting our first puppy as a family.
I have bad allergies, so we wanted to get something that doesn't shed too much.
I was thinking either a Poodle or a Poodle mix.
We are getting it in the summer and our children will be 7 and 3.
What do you think would be the best family dog, and male or female?

my parents got a SChnoodle.....Schnauzer poodle mix.....he looks like a living muppet and has such a great personality.
He does not shed at all and was mixed with a toy poodle so he's on the small side. When I get home Ill post a pic so you can see. He was very easy to train too.
They have a male but I dont know it the sex would make a difference with behavior

If you do have dog allergies, you may be allergic to any dog...just know it's a gamble.
Best breeds are those that do not shed, but still no guarantee.
Trying to think of the best breed, what size dog would you prefer?

My DH is allergic and we have 2 havanese that we LOVE...probably a little too much. They're great with kids and super friendly. Here's a pic:

I have a male cockapoo (cocker spaniel poodle mix) and he's great. He was super easy to train loves other dogs and kids. He did have some aggressive tendencies but we were able to work through those. Females tend to be less dominant.

Even if you choose a non-shedding dog, be sure to spend some time with the exact dog (not just the same breed, but the exact dog you want to adopt / purchase) before you commit to anything. You can still be allergic to dogs that don't shed, but it is a lot less likely. Spending time with the dog before you commit to it will be the best way to tell if the dog will bother your allergies.

We have two cockapoos. They are friendly, sweet, playful, loving, and amazing with kids. I would definitely recommend them as a family dog.

we have a yorkie and a 6 month old. They are BFF. yorkies are usually good with children. She's about 8lbs, doesn't shed at all. she was so easy to papertrain.

we have a goldendoodle. She is more poodle than golden and has a curly coat. This makes her low to no shed. Dogs bother my husbands allergies but Maggie doesn't. She's as good as a big puppy can get with kids.

ITA. Nothing worse than finding a dog you love but have allergies to. Make sure to touch your face, hug the dog, etc.

ITA! I have a male cockapoo and he is the SWEETEST mush dog I have ever had or met. He is my third dog and my first cockapoo and if I were ever to get another dog, I would get a cockapoo.
Very good temperment and low shedding too.
My only complaint is he is very agile and can hop up and reach everything even though he's only 17 lbs.

Very good advice. It will be heartbreaking for your kids to bond with a dog and have to give it up if allergies come up! 
Many people with allergies also love bichons!
another tip with the "designer mixes" such as cockapoos, golden doodles, etc - they are not all gauranteed to be non shedders! Some cockapoos have more of a spaniel coat for example which does shed a bit!
