We finally got our puppy neutered. Post-OP Question?

We finally got Piper neutered yesterday. Today, he seems almost back to his regular self. Although we know that this was the right thing to do, it was heart-breaking dropping him off.

The Collar (lampshade) is bothering me. He seems to be adjusting to it though.

I am nervous to put him in the crate. Nervous that his cone head will get stuck in the grates. I know that if we remove it, we will have a hard time putting it back on.

How long did you keep the collar on your dog? Our vet is saying 2 weeks. But, everyone we have talked to mentioned that they didn't have it on for that long. Just curious of your experiences.

Is it a boy or a girl? My vet did not have me use the collar for EITHER and they really barely bothered with their incisions.....

Maddie didn't have a collar either and she didn't bother her stitches much at all (once in a blue moon once it started scabbing).

Piper is a boy.

Thanks girls. Maybe, tomorrow we will take it off. The funny thing is that he can reach his (sack) with the collar. It is just more difficult to get to.

Re: We finally got our puppy neutered. Post-OP Question?

Honestly, we took the collar off about an hour after we got him home. He was very distressed by it, he is big so he kept knocking things over and tried running into his then hiding place which was my closet floor and he kept banging into walls, etc...so we took it off and watched him and he was fine. I could not do that to him for 10 days.

Re: We finally got our puppy neutered. Post-OP Question?

Maverick had it done last thurs. we did feel bad but he isnt ANY different.

He has to wear this cone til this Mon. He stays in the crate during the day while we are work. He was fine until he was able to gnaw at the cone and got it off and started to rip out his stitches!!!!!!Chat Icon

DH came home for lunch and saw him with the cone off chewing on himself. He rushed him to the vet and he just loosened them. Vet said he healed well so the stitches being loose was ok. They gave him a new and bigger cone. He is used to the cone. He sleeps with us at night and whacks us in the head with the cone!

But if all is well he will have it off Mon so if that is the case he had this cone on for 11 days.

One suggestion...you might want to try putting a tshirt on him that might block the access to his parts if possible. We did this for my girl, and she really did leave the incision alone then.

Thanks Girls!

He still has his cone on. I am going to give him a few days with it.

It is so funny...I see that he is trying to scratch behind his ears but he can't with the collar. So I have to scratch for him.

It is so sad b/c he is soooo active that I am sure he is going to go nuts without any real doggy exercise. He usually gets 40 minutes a day of physical play time. His walks will have to do.

We were suppose to keep the cone on for 2 weeks, but I only made it about a week. SHe was bumping into everything, and was so uncomfortable. She still went into her crate during the day and night. She found a way to get herself comfortable.
