We finally saw the pulmonologist today for EJ - LONG

I had to wait a while to get an appointment and today was the day.

It's NOT what I wanted to hear.

I saw 2 specialists today. I met Dr. Roberts (thanks for the recommendations on him, he is great!). We are going to do a blood test to make sure the black mold of the bathroom did not affect him. They actually do not think so but we are making sure with the blood test. We are also testing him for some allegies.

They are diagnosting him with Reactive Airways Disease aka childhood asthma. He does not have asthma yet though and we don't know at this point in time if he will or not.

He is still on the nebulizer 1 time per day. The ped wanted us to stay on it until we see the specialist. He is on Pulmocort. Now the shock..... he needs to be on it most likely for the next 4-5 years. Yes, I said YEARS. Not what I expected at all from the visit.

On the "positive" side. 75% of children grow out of it.

Since there was 2 "incidents" so far (Christmas time and more recently this late Spring) which required him to be on the nebulizer, it has been ruled that it's not just a coincidence. DH and I have both allergies, I have eczema, etc... all dominent issues that DS could have. Both time he was sick it came following a viral infection whch triggers the wheezing and complications.

I asked the dr if he was OK to be around other kid (GTGs, etc...). I try not to be paranoid but DS had been so sick that I try to keep him away or meet people on outdoor playtime. He told me this is why he needs to stay on the nebulizer. So he has a stronger resistence to germs. But he can play with his little buddies just fine.

We have to go back in several weeks to develop a "long term" action. Meaning what do we do in the next 1-2 years. How do we wean him out of the nebulizer, etc...

Sorry it was a long post.

I cannot even write how I feel about this. Chat Icon

Poor guy.

On the positive side, he WILL most likely outgrow this. And now you have the knowledge and tools to ensure that his immune system stays strong which is a great preventative!

At my son's daycare there are many children in the 4 year old range who are lined up for nebulizer treatments every morning when I drop my son off. It just becomes part of their routine and they know they need to do it. These are the same kids who I see running around like maniacs on the playground on the days I pick him up!

My DH is severly asthmatic and unfortunately Emily inherited that from him.

We had over 3 attacks, so this past winter she was diagnosed with official Asthma. I knew that's what it was anyway.

She's been taking pulmicort 2X/day for about a year and a half now, and I have to say that I think it is a WONDER drug.

We took her off of it for a week in the winter and she got sick, immediately.

Also since it is an inhaled steroid, it is mainly just going into the lungs, not through the rest of the bloodstream. It is also not a testosterone based steroid, so side effects are slim to none.

Let me know if you need anyone to tlak to about this, since Asthma is very much a first-hand thing over here.

My first reaction was to ask about side effects. Mostly none. Apparently, they did a study and they only noticed that the only affect on growth and development was the kids on he nebulizer tx were 1 centimeter shorter than other kids their age. DS is already 31 inches at 1 so I am not too worried.

Awww Sophie, sorry EJ has to go through this. On the plus side though, at least the doctors know what it is and how to treat it, rather than subjecting the little guy to more and more and more tests to figure it out.
