My DH is severly asthmatic and unfortunately Emily inherited that from him.
We had over 3 attacks, so this past winter she was diagnosed with official Asthma. I knew that's what it was anyway.
She's been taking pulmicort 2X/day for about a year and a half now, and I have to say that I think it is a WONDER drug.
We took her off of it for a week in the winter and she got sick, immediately.
Also since it is an inhaled steroid, it is mainly just going into the lungs, not through the rest of the bloodstream. It is also not a testosterone based steroid, so side effects are slim to none.
Let me know if you need anyone to tlak to about this, since Asthma is very much a first-hand thing over here.
My first reaction was to ask about side effects. Mostly none. Apparently, they did a study and they only noticed that the only affect on growth and development was the kids on he nebulizer tx were 1 centimeter shorter than other kids their age. DS is already 31 inches at 1 so I am not too worried.
The doctor also explained to us that if she wasn't on the pulmicort she'd probably have attacks much more frequently, and she'd be on oral steroids more often----which would have way more side effects in the long run....
And the nebulizer treatments do get easier. Emily can practically give it to herself now.
Hang in there .... it'll be OK

Re: We finally saw the pulmonologist today for EJ - LONG
It's hard to hear that your little guy has to go through this, but do take some comfort in that it's very common at this age, that it's more common in boys because their airways are smaller, and a good percentage of them grow out of it.
We are in a similar situation. DS went on pulmicort at 9 mo in Jan after being in the hospital for labored breathing and my having complained for months about his breathing. Not long after he started it, he was soooo much better and we didn't have any more occurances through the winter. The pulminologist let us come off of the pulmicort in June for the summer, but we'll be right back on it in September. It'll probably be this was for us too for the next couple years.

I know how hard this has been for you. The good thing is now you can get some real answers and begin early intervention.

Re: We finally saw the pulmonologist today for EJ - LONG
Thanks everybody for your hugs and FMs!
I am still a bit in shock but I take comfort that he has a good chance to grow out of it. DH think it's not too bad and it could have been worst. I tend to agree with him but it's hard to think about your little baby going through this.
He is already used to the nebulizer even the mask over his face. It was actually easier this time around vs when he was 6 months old.
I will discuss with his ped the findings from the specialist and go from there too.
