We found a dog for our family!
We went to Bideawee in Westhampton today, and they were absolutely wonderful. They matched us with the perfect doggie for our family. He is a 4yo shepherd mix and is just the sweetest thing ever. He was great with the babies, gave them both lots of kisses, and they said he is good with cats too! I got a call only a few hours later that we were approved for adoption! We should be able to bring him home on Thursday... what do I need to get to prepare for our new addition? Oh and does anyone have a crate they are looking to get rid of? I tried on Craigslist but didn't see anything.

how big of a crate? i have one i can give you, i'll take measurements of it when i get home.
you'll need a leash, a collar, name tag, food and water bowls, a bed, toys, food, and treats. also a hair brush and doggy shampoo. thats all i can think of at this moment.

Thanks! We need a fairly large one. He is not huge, but not small either. I was looking on the Petco website and they had one that was 36"L by 24"W and was good for pets up t0 70lbs, so I think that would work.

Re: We found a dog for our family!
Don't buy a crate at Petco......waaay too expensive!
I got mine at Walmart for $70 and it holds a pet up to 90 lbs.
It needs to be big enough for them to stand up and turn around in.

So funny you mention this! I never go to petco anymore for the cats b/c it is so expenisve - DH went to walmart last night to get some stuff and I asked him to look to see if they had dog crates - and they did, for the prices you said!

Re: We found a dog for our family!
Congratulations!! I'm so happy for you! I can't wait to see pics. This is a great thing you did.
In addition to what everyone else said, also make an appt with the vet asap. Do you get their shot/vet records from the shelter? Get a flea comb and comb him before he goes into the car or house, to make sure he's clear. There are products that can kill all the fleas on a dog fast, before you introduce them to areas where they can jump off and colonize.
Can you find out what food he was on at the shelter? I'd start with a small bag of that and then wean him onto a better brand over the course of a week to minimize poopy problems.
Also, see if you can setup a poop/pee/walk/food/bed schedule now, it will ease him into the transition into your home. They like to have a routine they can count on when everything else is scary and new.
I recommend the Furminator brush and the Zoom Groom, and LUCKY YOU we're going into shedding season. I'd use the Zoom Groom as much as you want and the Furminator maybe once a week during active shedding, brushing him gently.
Kong is for SURE a great thing. Other great toys for powerful chewers:
Nylabones Buster Cube Tug-a-Jug Hard rubber balls that don't squeeze easily in your hand
That's all I can think of right now. I'm so happy for you guys!!

Thanks so much! I am so glad you wrote this, because I was actually going to ask about taking him to the vet. I know they have a clinic there and he should be up to date on everything, but I wasn't sure if we should get him checked out by our own vet.
I'm definitely going to find out what they were feeding him at the shelter so we can transition him. This what we did with the cats, and it worked out well.
Is shedding season different for cats and dogs? The cats shed like crazy in the spring and summer but at this time of year they don't shed as much.

Brinkley had a stomach rash, dandruff, dry skin, ear mites and although it went undetected by the test, roundworm too. And he came from a breeder, not a shelter, so yea, I think better safe than sorry!
From what I've read, shedding season is spring and fall for dogs. Brinkley is already starting, but not in huge clumps yet. I hope you have a good vacuum.
I'm so excited for you!

With three cats? Are you kidding? I actually just bought the Bissel Pet hair eraser, it is a handheld vac. It is AWESOME on the couches.
