We had a scare today - febrile seizure. Question about ER's on LI
So DD's mystery fever spiked and she had a febrile seizure - caused by the fever. DH thankfully was home and long story short - we went to Wintrhop and they took good care of her.
Living in central Nassau, DH and I have been talking about moving to other areas either in Suffolk or out of state. However, as we sat there in Winthrop's pediatric ER, he turned to me and said - maybe we should build up on our house and stay - he wasn't sure such amenities such as pediatric ER are everywhere or at least not as close. I mean - the cops showed up while I was still on the phone with 911 and the ambulance was right after and then in less than 10 minutes we were at the hospital. Just curious, we've gotten used to having this in our backyard. I know obviously LIJ has the Schneider's hosptial, but what about other hospitals?

Oh no! My DD had a seizure this year...which wasn't febrile, but I know exactly how you feel!
As far as hospitals go...thankfully, that was the one and only time we had to utilize one, so I have no advice, but I will say that a hospital would not factor into my decision to stay in or leave a particular area.

we go through this scare with my kid.
we use to live 25 minutes from ped ER...now we live 45 since we moved.
I admit, we have a lot of er visits while my DH is working...so its me driving, crying and hyperventaling to ER. We moved though, I just have to cross that bridge when it comes.

I think most major metro areas have pediatric ER's. I live in Raligh NC and we have one here. In Suffolk I believe Stonybrook has a ped. ER

Glad everything worked out; what a scare
I think many areas have pediatric ERs, I would just check before you move.

Re: We had a scare today - febrile seizure. Question about ER's on LI
Thank you for the well wishes. I will check into the area Ped ER's. While I hope to never have to use one again for such a scare, it definitely will factor into where we go. Today was just too much. Looked less like what I thought a seizure would be like and more like she was "checking out" - eyes rolled to back of her head and she was unresponsive - she took shallow breaths, that was all I could hold onto until she came out of it. DH is still in tears - he held her while I called 911. We're both messed up in the head about the whole thing right now - even if they aren't the most "life threatening" thing, it was horrible to go through - I wish it had been me is all I could say - not pregnant of course.

You pose a great ?. We too live in Nassau but plan to move to Suffolk.
I wonder what are some great hospitals in Suffolk and which have a ped ER.
I think about this too.

Re: We had a scare today - febrile seizure. Question about ER's on LI
the seizure was horrible.
while I waited for ambulance to arrive...I thought he was brain dead. eyes rolled back, stiff as a board. I remember coaching myself...he is still your baby and you love him...over and over till they arrived.
he had another one this spring...luckily DH was home for this one...i threw him at DH and ran out of the room, telling him what to do. I could never see that again, ever.

Re: We had a scare today - febrile seizure. Question about ER's on LI
Most major hospitals have a ped ER.
We drove to the ER thinking it was just cautionary because our pediatrician wanted us to get a few tests done to be safe. DS ended up having to get heart surgery. The ER is a terrible place to be. I hope never to go to the ER again.
One good thing is that DH works at the hospital so we'll always be close to an ER.

Re: We had a scare today - febrile seizure. Question about ER's on LI
I had to take DD to the ER 2 days ago and we went right down the street, to Mid Island. It isn't a pediatric ER but they had us in and out so quickly, I wouldn't hesitate to go there again. And it's so close.
DH and I were commenting on the way home, how lucky we are to have a hospital so close by. And that in the future if we decided to move, that would be a consideration.

Re: We had a scare today - febrile seizure. Question about ER's on LI
Only certain hospitals on LI have pediatric ICUs, which we learned when DS was admitted last year with pnuemonia. In Suffolk they are Good Sam and Stonybrook. In Nassau, I know LIJ and North Shore, but I don't know which others.
ETA I see people are talking about ped ERs. I don't know if the ERs are more common, but there definitely are only some with a ped ICU.

Re: We had a scare today - febrile seizure. Question about ER's on LI
I am so glad G. is OK. That must have been frightening for you. I know when P. had a fever for several days, this was my biggest worry.
I love Winthrop. I delivered there and my peds are affiliated with them. DH and I haven't really discussed moving away from LI, but medical care is one of the reasons I would not move out of state, unless I was near a major hospital with good care. I think it's great we have the pediatric ERs, but I also consider it an issue as I get older and will need more care for myself.

Re: We had a scare today - febrile seizure. Question about ER's on LI
The biggie Pediatric programs in Suffolk County are Stony Brook and Good Sam.
As far as other locations, there are plenty of children's hospitals and pediatric ER's where ever you go, you just have to research the areas completely so you know the distance and what programs are available in that area. Just like researching schools, you should research health care for your kids and for yourselves as well. When we lived in NC, I knew we were just around the corner from Carolinas Medical and there was a children's hospital right in Charlotte too. Definitely research it. You may or may not change your destination based on what you find. I assure you though, you would have gotten really fast service like that pretty much anywhere. Even when mom had her stroke, the cops and ambulance were there in record time.
