Weaning reflux meds question
We took DD for her first appointment with her NY GI. She was taking 15 mg of Nexium and .6 of Pepcid twice a day. She was increased about a month ago because of vomiting. Mind you she still spits up, just not as much.
The GI wants to try to wean her Nexium down to 10mg and hopefully get her off of it because of calcium absorption concerns with extended PPI usage.
So my question is-when you tried weaning, when did you notice if it was or wasn't going to be successful?
I didn't give her night dose (5mg) last night or tonight.
I noticed she was very gassy late this afternoon and very fussy and crying a lot. But part of me thinks this is too early to see anything.
When did you notice your child was not ready to wean? How long should I give it? TIA!

Re: Weaning reflux meds question
we weaned around 9 mos I think. dropped the morning dose of Prevacid first. ped said to give it 2 weeks and if fine, then drop the evening dose. I would think one day would be too soon to tell, but that's because Lucy had silent reflux so it didn't bother her I think until her esophagus was in bad shape and that won't happen in a day. was your DD a silent reflux baby or did she spit up a lot?

Mich - I feel like I knew the second we tried to wean Jordan off of Pepcid - his reaction (barely drinking) was instant

Silent at first, but she started vomiting once she became more mobile. And fussed when she vomited.

Yeah, I thought you told me that.
You know first hand how happy Sienna is. She was so fussy. Just crying from about 1pm on, and it was non stop. And terribly gassy.
Dr. H just increased her last month, so technically this is the dose she always had. I am going to watch her tomorrow to see what happens.

Re: Weaning reflux meds question
I cut out the middle dose first. He is always worse at night...He is still on that dose. Dr wants me to wean him off of it totally..I only have a small bottle left. He gets 1 ML now. He was on 3 up until 8-9 months old. Then I got him down to 1ml at 12 months...He only gets the extra dose when he has a flare up. I noticed I had to give him extra Mylicon when I first weaned him...He is doing pretty good... Knock on wood!

We tried to wean dd off prevacid. I found by the 3rd day it hit her. Day one and two fine. By the third day awful!

Okay, that is what I figured. She is definitely getting a little fussier, but I figured that it might be a little too soon.

Re: Weaning reflux meds question
DS is almost 10 months old and if we forget a dose it is HORRIBLE! They want to try to wean him off by a year, but he still throws up a lot and I am so scared about this!
