web design?
Just curious what do people pay or charge to have a web page design? I designed my own website and I have gotten a lot of comments and people telling me that I could freelance. I would love to but I wouldn't know where to begin.
On another note I would really love to hear what you think of my website. Im still working on it trying to make it a little easier to navigate. I've been staring at it for so long now I could use someone else's thoughts. TIA

I do web design for a living. Are you using Microsoft Front Page for your website?

Re: web design?
I did it through yahoo sitebuilder. I know there are much better programs out there but for the price I had to try it. Now Im really interested in how it all works but html codes and all that kind of stuff is like learning Greek to me. What is microsoft front page?
The hard part now is I tried to have a "store" set up where you can buy through paypal and I'm really not so good with it...its going to take me a while but Im sure eventually I'll figure it out. The website it self took me months.
Any words of advice from a pro?

Re: web design?
Your website looks great, but I would not recommend using Yahoo site builder for a shopping are. You have to keep in mind that when people are shopping off your website you need to have a lot of security measures in order to protect their information. Once you start getting into that you should really shop around for a program that can help you create the shopping cart features and protect the security of your clients. Microsoft front page is very similar to the program you are probably using through Yahoo site builder. If you really want to get into designing without have to learn HTML code I would recommend Dreamweaver which is made by Macromedia, who was taken over by Adobe.

Re: web design?
Thank you I may just have to pick that up....although Im starting to understand the html world, Im just slow. By the time I really learn it all there will be something else out there and I'll have to start all over.
As for the shopping it is through paypal so I believe its more secure but I have to do some more reading up on the shoping cart option. Thank you for the advice...I'd like to learn more about designing websites but more for a hobby for now...it does get very complex after a while

Even I feel lost after a while, it is very overwhelming. Doing the shopping feature through paypal right now is your best bet. We go to security conferences every year and every year they give you something new to think about in terms of keeping your customers safe. A place like paypal is spending $$$$$$$$ a year to make sure they are on top of the security game, they are also insured in case God Forbid something happens to one of your customers information.

Wow Dreamweaver is $400? I would love to get it but thats a bit much for me right now....is it really worth it?

If you are going to design sites professionally I think you need to use Dreamweaver. Other applications aren't supported by all browsers correctly (firefox, etc.). Dreamweaver is a little tricky--I would recommend taking a class if you seriously want to get in to web design.

I love working with Dreamweaver but that is because it use the same layout aand design aspect of the other design programs I use. You can also use it without having to know HTML really well. Like nov04libride said, if it is something you would like to do for other people and charge them, or even to freelance for someone learning this program would be a very good tool. Like nov04libride said the programs that are used through site builders are not supported by all browsers.

Re: web design?
Do a google search on HTML tutorials, there's a really great one out there but I can't remember the name. It lets you enter the code you want, and see what the results will look like.
I started with Dreamweaver which gives you the option of designing with a graphical user interface (GUI), coding, or both at the same time, split screen. It's a great program.
I moved on to open source/free programs like WordPress for blogs and Coppermine for photo galleries. I learned as I went along, played around, fixed my mistakes. I used templates to start with but customized them to the hilt.
My only suggestions so far are to do away with the drop down menu and lay that information out across the top or left side of the page. It makes it easier to navigate, and you could include a Home button so they can always get back to the first page. The other suggestion is to make sure the images you use are licensed. I know someone who was threatened with litigation because he grabbed material off the internet without permission.
There are stock photography sites you could find for material if you need it.
Good luck, the site looks good!

I would have to second the navigation of the site. You would be better off laying it out so that it is easier to naviagte through the site. I always tell our designers, you need to design your site for the least technological advanced person you know.

I agree with this, and the pictures on the right are all uneven--I would use a photoeditor to make one even photo banner.

Re: web design?
Also, the older versions of Dreamweaver are great for beginners so you could even check out eBay or something. I think I'm two versions back, but all I use it for nowadays is getting and putting files on my server.

The navigation is much better, but one thing that I want to point out that dreamweaver will help you on is that it will make the background alignment for each of your pages identical instead of it shifting over. It will give your website a more uniformed look.

Re: web design?
One more thing to add about the naviagation you should have each one on all the pages. I noticed that some pages have more links for different pages that the other pages do not have. Put all the links on the top instead of having different ones on each page, that way if I am on the home page I can access all the same links from the top as the office page.

Re: web design?
When I was putting the site together I used alot of different sources and I did cut and pasted from many. After a while they all say the same. I didnt think I did anything verbatim but I will be sure to change it up alittle and add their link.

I would change it up a little or just contact them and ask them if you credit them on the site if you can use the same text.
