Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
So as most of you know, my DH has terminal cancer.
In light of this I've been making some changes in my life and doing some of the things I've always wanted to do but have been scared to for some reason or never made the time for.
1. Shoot a gun - did that last weekend and had a great time.
2. Skydiving.
I mentioned to DH that I want to go skydiving over 4th of July weekend when some friends are coming to visit.
He has no desire to skydive at all and isn't really in favor of me going, but he wouldn't stop me from doing it.
However, it's been mentioned to me by more than one person that it's irresponsible for me to skydive because it could kill me and since DH already has a death sentence over his head I shouldn't risk it.
I'm making this anonymous so you can weigh in without calling yourself out, but if you have an opinon, I'd like to hear it either way.

Re: Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
Lauren, my gut says if you really want to do it, go for it.
There are many things we do every day that put our lives at risk, driving a car (and having a squirrel run across your path ), eating food that can get lodged in your throat causing you to choke. Skydiving just has a slightly higher inherent risk that comes with it, but if it's an experience you really want to have, go for it!

Tough call. My gut reaction is for you NOT to go. I'm not sure why since living an ordinary life is probably more risky than sky-diving one time--car accidents, etc.
I think the fact that DH isn't in favor of it and then the "what-ifs" would prevent me from doing it.
Can you shoot a few more guns?

I've always wanted to skydive, and DH has always expressed concern over it. Like your DH, he has no interest.
Now that I'm pregnant and will soon have a child, I know that I will never skydive. I won't risk anything happening that would prevent me from caring for my little , or worse, leaving DH all alone with him.

I agree. People skydive all the time and you don't hear about parachutes failing every time a plane goes. up. You can't live your life in fear. Have fun

Re: Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
I'm so sorry about your DH...my wakeup call in life was 9-11...i worked right by the WTC...since then I have started doing all the things i had on my "Life Wishlist" because i realized that life is short and that tomorrow is not a guarantee...i literally sat in my office thinking "i don't want to die today because i never got to...."since then i have done a variety of things including skydiving (which i highly recommend).....basically all the things i wanted to try but either thought "what if this happens" or just pushed off for another day...and i am so much happier for it.

Re: Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
I see nothing wrong with you going -- you do a jump the first time with an instructor--tandem style. Its perfectly safe.
You can't live your life with "what ifs" - sure you can have an accident skydiving but you know what could easily just as happen and probably have a higher chance of? That you leave your house and get hit by a car or something. Who knows what happens tomorrow.
Do it and have a good time.

Re: Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
my DH went before I met him - he has a dvd of him skydiving and i love watching it i WISH i got to do it too - now he wants to go again with me and i am nervous about it - when i was younger i didnt worry about things - now im afraid of what "could" happen to one of us.....i know i wouldnt do it if i had a child though just in case - BUT people skydive ALL the time - so it can't be THAT dangerous right?

Re: Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
If its something you've always wanted to do, then I say do it. My advice is to do a tandem jump (with a pro attached to you). That way you don't have to take the 8 hour course, and you get to free fall for about 45 seconds. If you go alone and do the static line, then theres no free fall. The most accidents happen when people want to jump by themselves and then they usually get hurt on the landing. Its an amazing experience!

Re: Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
I really want to be able to say GO. It's an amazing experience. I might even go so far as to say that it changed my life.
And reason says it's safe, as at any given time there are probably 1,000 people jumping out of planes and you hardly ever hear of accidents.
However...I am a certified skydiver (12 jumps on my own, not tandem) who hasn't jumped since meeting my anti-skydiving DH.
It's not like I need his permission, but -- knowing how he feels about skydiving, something keeps me from doing it again....

I say go for it!! It is a safe experience...those instructors have just as much desire to go home at the end of the day as you do!! Have to live life, as I'm sure you know from living with a husband with a terminal disease. Best to the both of you and your family.

Re: Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
I did it last year and the possibility of death never once crossed my mind.
I say do it. It's insane. In a good way.
My instructor/jumper was great if you need a rec - I went to Skydive LI.

i feel the same way - i always wanted to bungee jump and skydive but i never will. too many "what-ifs" for me.
and yes i know that i could be killed in a car accident or a plane crash but why add another risk into the mix?

If its something you really want to do, you should do it. Fear can get in the way of so many dreams. And like other posters said, you have a much better chance of dyeing in a car accident then skydiving.
I truly believe if its your time to go, its your time to go, we don't have any control over it.

Re: Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
I've always wanted to go.
I think you should do it. when you first do it i believe you are given basic training and go out with a parnter tandem. So its pretty safe.
i think you have a bigger chance of getting hit by a car crossing the street than getting hurt at skydiving. Like taking an airplane. ( I was seriously afraid of flying, and then once i did it, i wanted to fly everywhere..LOL)
Good luck!

I agree- why add more risks in life? This is said because you have a child. Everything changed for me when I had . Now, I feel more careful with myself- all I have to think about is them crying for mama and I would never come.
But, then again I am a nervous, pessimist so it is true that it is more risky to walk across the street- on second thought- go for it!
I don't know..... ignore me.....

Re: Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
If this is something you REALLY want to do, I think you should do it.
The "what ifs"... are just people stopping you because of their own fears.
As long as you are with a well trained instructor and have the most well reputable place, it should be fine.
Is there a risk? YES! It's not like you are pouring some lemonade drinks. It's considered "dangerous". But so is hicking, horseback riding, motorcycle, etc...
BTW, I loved shooting the minute I did it for the 1st time.

Re: Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
Before you go, you could look into your medical and life insurance policies and see what coverage (if any) they'd provide if you were injured or killed while skydiving. Many policies specifically exclude coverage during activities they define as risky.

Re: Weigh in with your opinion RE: Skydiving
Okay....first of all - you are not going to die going skydiving. Unless of course, you just jump out of a plane with some "guy". Any reputable skydiving place has hardly any accidents and I only know of one that has had a death.
Secondly - You HAVE to do it!!!!!!!!!!! It was the most amazing experience of my life and if I had the $$$$ I would do it again and again. I would want to get certified and jump alone.
Live your life to the fullest....do the things you want to do because if you don't you may regret it.
