Re: Weight loss surgery...
My SIL had it done a little over a year ago and I'd say she lost around 60 pounds - though she did get pregnant around 3 months after having the procedure.
I dont believe she went to the best hospital for it. There was no outpatient counseling - no support group, no follow up visits regarding nutrition and lifestyle change, etc. I would go with a hospital that views this surgery as part of the solution - not the solution in and of itself. It's a major life change and I wish she had gone to a hospital that could give her more help and support post surgery.

I know 3 people that had it, all of them were overweight but not more than 100lbs. One died (age 55), one almost died (age 29) has serious health problems from it and the other one is fine (age 27).
So my opinion is if you can loose it another way try too. My cousin is still suffering from this surgery.
Was this gastric bypass or the lap band?

Re: Weight loss surgery...
I wish I could bring myself to do it because I've tried everything and I'm back on Weight Watchers and working out at the gym because since having my DD I just can't voluntarily bring myself to have any surgery that could be life threatening, I just can't do it. I've known a couple of people who have had it and have lost weight and look great. I don't know a big difference about the the lap band vs. the gastric bypass though. Good luck whatever you decide.

I know several people who had it done. I think the weight comes off so quickly that the skin looks weird IMO. DHs uncle just had the band put in 6 months ago & he lost 1/2 his original body weight. He looks sickly sometimes & his skin looks awful
ETA: I also think that his Dr is not working well with him in his post-procedural care & diet. I think follow-up is VERY important for these kinds of surgery.
The skin may look awful because it is still early on after surgery, and especially because the weight does not all come off the same day or month as the surgery.
I had a friend who had gastric bypass a long time ago. Her Dr. made her go on a diet and lose some weight ahead of time, just to show she was dedicated, or at least I thought that was the reason.

Re: Weight loss surgery...
My cousin had it done this summer.
She was always very overweight since birth and tried everything over the years.
At 42 years of age, she was very obese and is a single mom to an adopted 4 year old boy. She was taking insulin 5 times a day.
She made the decision to have it done when her doc said, "Look, you will most likely be dead within 5 years unless we do this".
Recovery was not easy and she needed a lot of support to help take care of her little boy. She still has a way to go but a lot of weight has come off.
I greatly admire her courage and determination. It is still a rough road.

Re: Weight loss surgery...
Both my cousin had it. One had gastric and the other lap band. Both are very happy with their results.
My male cousin with the gastric bypass has lost over 200 pounds in about 2 years. He just had some plastic surgery and feels and looks great. I weigh more than him now!
His wife had the lap band about 8 months ago and lost about 70 lbs. They are both thrilled. They had it done in Dobbs Ferry I believe. There is a doc there that is pretty well known for it. They get lots of counseling and they go to the gym.
They had both dieted for years and lost weight but not enough to help with the medical issues. They were obese.
They would tell you that it's not an easy choice or road to go down but worth it. They want to be around to see their kids live their lives.
