Weird, kind of morbid question, with poll
Have you ever hit an animal while driving, or been a passenger when somebody has?
ETA: I was in the car once when my mother hit a raccoon and another time when my father hit a cat and I cried both times. I would be devastated if I hit something while I was driving.

Re: Weird, kind of morbid question, with poll
yes, as I was getting on the service road of the LIE, it was late and an oppossum ran right under my tire and died, cried for days
DH always yells at me because I will slow down of move out of the way if a squirrel comes across the road, only when no one is behind me though.

Yes. My dad was driving when a cat darted out in front of us. We hit it, and stopped, but the cat immediately got up and ran away.
It was a lot scarier when I was in the car with my mom and some friends and a young teenager on a bike came zooming around the corner without looking and ended up on the hood of our car. I was hysterical, but thankfully the child was okay.

No, thank god. Your dad hit a cat? I don't know what I'd do if I hit a cat. Did he stop and see if it was OK? Once I thought I hit a squirrel but I guess it ran fast because it wasn't dead on the road...When I was in middle school a friend's parents were driving us and we hit a deer, but it ran into the woods. Hope it was OK.

Re: Weird, kind of morbid question, with poll
I was driving when I hit a squirrel. It was so sad, I went to college crying BUT if I chose not to hit the squirrel and swerved to the right, I would have hit a parked car and if I swerved to the left I would have hit my mom driving home from food shopping.

Yeah, when we were on the Robert Moses Pkwy, coming home from the beach house. The traffic was heavy, but moving quickly and the cat darted out from the side. He saw it, but couldn't brake, or he would've caused a huge accident. He did go back to check on it, but he hit it HARD. We knew that it wouldn't be okay. I literally sobbed because of it.

Re: Weird, kind of morbid question, with poll
I never have. But where I went to school a lot of people hit deer - its frightening and your entire car can be totaled.
My grandpa killed a frog once in FL. My sister and I were little and freaked out because we saw the blood coming out of it when we got out of the car.

In Florida, our community had a bad vulture problem and one flew into my windshield while I was driving. It did not crack my windshield though. I was freaked out though.
another time I hit an armadillo. It got caught in my transmission

Re: Weird, kind of morbid question, with poll
Fortionatly No! DH on the other hand Im pretty sure has hit a cat I cant even hear about it or I start to cry let alone see it. I live on a fairly busy roads so there are a lot of dead cats from cars who just dont know how to slow down This is how one of my little kittys died. DH cousin had the door open and didnt see him come out. I found his little body in the driveway! I went to go get him cause it looked like he was just sleeping and he was missing part of his head

Re: Weird, kind of morbid question, with poll
OMG, yes this happened to me not to long ago. I hit a raccoon or at least I thought it was. I didn't even see it coming out and had no time to swerve. I was so upset that I immediately started to cry and had to pull over because I felt like I was going to be sick. I was gagging and crying because at first I didn't know what I hit. Thankfully my husband was in the car with me. He was shocked at my reaction. I cried for days over this. When we got home, I called 911 and told them that I hit an animal and that I thought it was dead. I wanted to go back out so bad to see what it was and even to see if it was ok, but DH assured me that it was dead and wouldn't let me go. But that feeling was horrible, I'll never forget that.
ETA: I just ran over a bird 2 weeks ago. My DH calls me a murderer now. Just so you know, I absolutely adore animals, so this is not easy for me.

Re: Weird, kind of morbid question, with poll
I was passenger when my dad hit a deer. (or as my mom told the insurance company, a deer hit us)
It was a big thing-the car was wrecked, we were kinda stranded--it was before cell phones. The state troppers didn't see the deer anywhere nearby,.

Re: Weird, kind of morbid question, with poll
Yes, I hit a deer...it was awful!
I was driving in VA in the dark (no street lights) and a deer jumped out of a ditch and landed on my front windshield/roof. The front grill of my car was fine since I didn't actually hit into it. The whole top portion of my car caved in. The deer fell back in the ditch (and a policeman ended up shooting it to put it out of its misery, which was awful!).
To top it all off, I had to stay on the road b/c there was no shoulder (just the ditch), a lot of other people driving by got out to wait with me for the police. Well some idiot came speeding down the road, didn't see all of us and drove right into the back of my car!

It's happened to me twice. Both incidents were actually within a week of each other - which I thought was really strange.
I cried the first time because it made a terrible thumping noise that kept running through my head

I ran over a rabbit once - it just darted right in front of my car - there was nothing I could do. I screamed and looked in my rearview mirror to see if it was ok. It kind of jumped around and flipped out a little but then it got up and ran away.
Another time I was sitting in traffic and I saw an injured pigeon on the highway in the lane next to me - it had hurt its leg and was trying to get across the road, but some guy ran over it - it exploded and feathers flew all over my car. It was the grossest and most upsetting thing I've ever witnessed

Re: Weird, kind of morbid question, with poll
I hit a deer once. I was driving on a curvy road and it jumped out in front of me. I wasn't going that fast, but it bumped off the corner of my hood and ran off into the woods. But this caused me to hit sand on the side of the road and skid into a tree. The front of the car (my parent's like, 6 month old car ) was bent into a U shape since I hit it dead center. I had 5 of my friends in the car, and luckily no one was hurt but I was sooooo PO'd. When we finally got a cop there, they looked in the woods, but no sign of the deer anywhere, so I think he probably just had a bruise. I also hit a bunny once - I fet so bad but there was nothing I could do for it I also saw someone hit a cat when they were driving in the back of a shopping center parking lot. They were going too fast and they just kept going! I am SURE they saw me stop and get out and they never even bothered to see if it was ok. I ran it to the vet as quickly as I could, but it was already dead. I was so sad.

I had an accident with a deer on Hunter Mt., he ran into the car and it was a pretty scary experience. That thud was horrible and I was going really slow about 5 miles an hour since it was a snowy mountain road.

Re: Weird, kind of morbid question, with poll
Yes! It was awful!
We were driving home on Round Swamp Rd - it's a dark, wind-y road - when, what looked like, a dog ran out in front of DH's car and he hit it!
I immediately started crying - like, uncontrollably - and we drove back to see what he actually hit - b/c if it was a dog we were going to go knocking on people's door's to find the guardian.
It wound up being a racoon...and my DH got out of the car and pushed the animal to the side of the road so that people wouldn't continue to run over it.
Afterwards, we were just about to pull onto our block when I saw a dead kitten on the side of the road. I lost it again - I tend to be very emotional when it comes to animals . Once we got home, I grabbed my cat and just held her for the rest of the night.
I honestly couldn't believe how shaken up I was...but I was so endeared to my DH for giving the racoon a (somewhat) proper "burial".
