Re: Weird Question
I believe (not positive) that the date is the sell by date. We usually drink the milk for a couple days after the date and then discard it.

Re: Weird Question
My DH is the same way. If it's midnight on the date on the carton - he won't go near it. Sometimes he'll say it's bad the day before.
I, on the other hand, go more by smell and consistency. Sometimes the milk goes bad BEFORE the date too!
ETA: I didn't answer your question. I *think* it's the "use by" date, not the sell by date.

That's very true. I always smell it before I drink it.

Re: Weird Question
I think it's the sell by date... and I smell it to make sure or not even if I just bought it! You never know if a truck broke down somewhere or the power went out in the factory....

Re: Weird Question
Spinoff Question: Does anyone know why the same carton of milk gets a different date for NYC? Milk goes bad faster in NYC, apparently??

Re: Weird Question
Okay, I looked at my milk carton, because I was curious. Mine actually says on it: "Sell by: June 11th"

I believe it is b/c of the way they distribute the milk in NY. Less refrigeration, etc.- so it goes bad quicker.

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe it gets shipped to NYC later?

I always laugh at that...why would their milk go bad faster...maybe it's cuz the trucks have to double park and it takes longer to unload?

Re: Weird Question
The date is the sell by. Some things I will use after that, but not milk.
I think the laws for refrigeration are different in the city. (I don't know if that is true, but heard that once)

Re: Weird Question
I think the date is the date is has to be sold by. However, I am like your DH, and throw it out on the date on the carton. My DH says "its still good". Not for me, I will not take any chances.

Re: Weird Question
I throw it out that day!!!!
And DH yells at me cause he thinks the dates are all a scam to get people to waste (throw out) what they have and didnt finish so they can go buy more.

So glad to see this is here! Darren and I have argued over this for years! Not just milk though...any and all items that have an expiration date.

Re: Weird Question
It "sell by date"...on the carton it even says "sell by" and then the date.
I am same way as your DH red. I will not go near it as soon as the date passes. DH will drink it a day or two after but I won't even touch it. I am the same with anything that has a date on it....I'm very neurotic that way.
DH always gets mad when I throw bread out. We buy the wonderbread and as soon as the date passes I throw the bread out and DH is like a "day or two after the expiration date will not kill you" he gets ****** cuz he'll be in the mood to make a sandwich and there'll be no bread...

This is my motto. I have had a few bad experiences with Dairy Barn in the summer - bad before the date...BLECH!

Re: Weird Question
if it is whole milk you have about 3 - 5 days after the date on the carton, if it is skim you have up to 7.

Re: Weird Question
I usually use it a few days after the date, according to the smell. Once that date approaches, I smell it every time I open it. I will not use it more than 3 days after, even if it smells fine.

Re: Weird Question
glad I am not the only one!! I always smell it first but I will NOT use/drink milk that is past the sell by date. I usually poor it out the day before and make DH go buy fresh!
Its true you really have to becareful b/c I have seen milk start to go bad before the sell by date I think thats when I got into my tossing it out the day before habit.
