DS was a head banger for nearly six months. 11 months to 17 months old. Chat Icon He has not done it for over two months. I have to say that when going through something like this you feel absolutely helpless. No one really ever talks about something like this, so I guess that's why I'm talking about it. Most parents feel ashamed to say that there DC would intentionally bash there head on the floor out of sheer frustration, anger or even attention. We dealt with the bruises and the stares from others but we got through it. Who would of thought that with time, patience and new ideas he would be done with that phase. Chat Icon Chat Icon

So, Chat Icon Chat Icon to anyone out there that has gone through the same thing.

Can I ask...was it always the floor or done in frustration?

DS will sit in the doorway and bang the back of his head on the molding. He keeps getting harder and harder until he cries. And it's not that he's looking for attention...he'll do it in the middle of me playing with him.Chat Icon

It was pretty much always the floor, table, or the side of his highchair. In the beginning he would do it along with screaming and crying. So we were pretty much forewarned. When we were advised to just ignore it, and divert his attention he got smarter and would move from the carpeted floor to the tile. Towards the end of his phase he would "test"us. Look first, then bang. Once we notice it went to an attention thing, we would pretend to do the act ourselves, and say"so, we're going to banh our head now, huh?" . Well once he realized it wasn't affecting us, it slowly went away.

It does sound to me that maybe your son is doing it more out of the cause and effect than anger or frustration. But, I'm not a doc! If you feel that he's doing it to harm himself, maybe you should mention it to your doctor.
