I pretty sure it doesn't. In order for jello to be that consistancy it needs the gelatin.

Yeah, jello is just the brand name of gelatin.

Re: dumb question: gelatin free jello?

I don't think so. I googled, and even though some is kosher, it still has animal in it, just processed in a kosher way (theres a better explanation out there).

But if you want a gelatin substitute, agar is recommended. It's vegetable based (i think seaweed)

Maybe a place like whole foods has flavored agar?

Yes agar has a gelatin-like consistency. But you won't get jello like you are familiar with from it.

Kool Aid Gels are gelatin free - they are like snacksize cups of jello

Hain makes gelatin free jello - though I can't remember if it comes only in the powdered mix or also comes already made. I think has carrageenan instead of gelatin, which is derived from seaweed.

Re: dumb question: gelatin free jello?

hmm i found this recipe:

20 cups of juice blend
(frozen & reconstituted, not from consintrate or powder)
ex. pinapple orange

4-6 tbsp of corn startch (depending how thick you want it)

-heat juice blend until reasonably hot on stove
-add cornstartch & stir until blended
-when it thickens like jelly put in dish
-refridgerate until 2-3 hours or until frozen

i wanted to make jello shots..
dh thinks this will just be gross. you think??

Re: dumb question: gelatin free jello?

Unflavored

I always though KoJel had fish byproducts, but according to their website "KoJel Dessert jel is virtually indistinguishable from gelatin. Contains absolutely no animal products, and is suitable for vegetarians."

HTH!

Any Kosher jello is gelatin free.

I've found many websites disputing this.
It's made from the same ingredients as non kosher gelatin, but is put through rigorous filtration and processing that it becomes something different. That is their explanation (in a nutshell). But it's still made from animals.
So some people still don't regard it as kosher, while others will accept it.

I think Pangea used to sell gelatin-free "jello"...not sure if they still do.

Part of Kosher is that animal slaughter is overseen by a rabbi and that the animals are killed in a quick and "painless" manner, but there are also other rules, including mixing meat and dairy, so there would also be a market for a gelatin-like product made from fish (which are "parave" and can be eaten with meat or dairy) that could be served at all types of meals. I was under the impression that this was how all kosher gelatins were made, but apparently I was not right.

I should have specified- some kosher jellos are made with agar-agar (made from seaweed).
