"well, we work"....this is my favorite line!
I work in the wedding industry and I very often get requests for people to come into my office for meetings at say......9PM, or even better, Memorial day weekend. We try to accommodate as best we can, but in the wedding months it's just impossible.
Their response when I tell them we are closed?
"well we work and that's the only time we can come in".........oh, gee.......I guess what I do here 40 hours+ per week is just for sh!ts and giggles.......
I actually just had someone cancel a contract because he couldn't come into our office the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Unbelieveable!
Sorry for the rants today, it's just shaping up to be a winner.....
ETA Let me clarify by saying that we are open until 8PM or better during the week and it is impossible to have appointments on the weekends, that's when everyone is working the jobs!

I get the same thing at work (medical office)...people want to come in at 9, 10pm. What do you think this is, a 24 hr supermarket?!?

To be honest, I choose many things (banks, doctors, hairdresser, personal trainer, etc.) by their availability.
They aren't much use to me if they're only available while I'm at work. I need night/weekend hours.

Yeah - I have the same problem being that my husband and i both work in the city. My doctor and my dentist are both in the city because of that..... And for our wedding we looked at a lot of NYC vendors even though we were getting married on LI. If I worked on LI and could leave for an hour that would be one thing but working in the city and trying to get to LI and back is a PITA.
On the flip side though - I totally understand your frustration. I would be annoyed if anyone thought that my job was to be at their beck and call. People should have more realistic expectations.

Me too. Doctors I'll see during work hours, but service-type industries I expect to be available in the evenings.

I agree - if places don't have times that fit my schedule - I won't use them

I remember this from wedding planning. and it was frustrating when a vendor had the same business hours as we worked. but i would not expect them to open for me.

Re: "well, we work"....this is my favorite line!
the only reason I go to my dr is because they have late and weekend hours, same reason when we searched for Bella's ped, and everything else.
I understand holidays are hard, but MUCH, if not ALL of my wedding planning was done after 7 pm (DJ, flowers, invites, dress fittings) and on weekends...we picked our venue on a Sunday...and checked others out at night...I work until at least 6 most nights, so 9-5 just doesn't work for me. The introduction of online banking and direct deposit has saved my life...
If they only had hours 9-5, I would not be able to use them....

Re: "well, we work"....this is my favorite line!
i hear ya!! my parents own a garden center and get comments all the time about their hours, things like " ok- i'll TRY to make it here after work", like they are trying to get my parents to feel sorry for them and stay open later. BUT, my parents are open 7 days a week and becasue they are only opened part of the year, its hard to find people to work for them for just a couple months... so it ends up just being the two of them donig everything, and they have a few hours of work to do even AFTER they close ( restocking, etc). people just don't get it... to me- you guys not being available the saturday of a holiday weekend is no reason to cancel a contract.. you need a break from your job, too!

Same here It's so hard - my life and appts revolve around before work, lunch time, and after work, or weekends. I don't have ANY flexibility with that.
Heck I even had an interview recently at 7am - I was there as the sun rose!

Same here! Most days, I work 10-12 hour days so I need night and weekend hours.
I have also gotten burned (i.e. make an appointment for 11:00, but they aren't ready to see me until 12:00 ) entirely too many times when I have gone for appointments during the day so I am done with that!

Same here, too! I work 60-80 hours a week and so does my FH. We can't always leave when we want to... so we choose many vendors / companies due to their availability. I think it's difficult to be in the wedding business and NOT have evening / weekend hours at least on occasion.

You have to understand people sying that. By working ina service industry, you may be sibject to more comments like that.
As opposed to a corporate type job, those who are in the service indstry are almost expected to be able to be more accomodating with respect to those who work a M-F, 9-5ish job.
I don't think anyone is telling you that what you do 40+ hours a week isn't work, but you should try and understand it from their perspective.

I definitely understand it, and have the same problem being that I work 10-7, but we are here until 8PM EVERY night. We accommodate most schedules and even stay late, but Memorial Day weekend? Come on.......
I never said we are 9-5, we aren't even close!

too bad they can't be open 24-7 - 7 days a week and just have different employees do different shifts
i realize with a wedding this still may not be ideal - since you have a certain planner assigned to you

It's just impossible to be able to accommodate EVERY shcedule, and in this case, this customer just took it too far.
I know when a schedule conflicts with mine, I have to make adjustments. I would never ask my doctor or attorney to come in on his day off just because I was unwilling to make accommodations for my own needs.

With a wedding planning business I have to say, I could totally see being closed Monday and Tuesday but open on the weekends. Not great for balance with the family, but probably good for business.

You really can't be closed any days, but because people want to meet with the actual person for their wedding, how can they be at someone's wedding on the weekend and in the office at the same time?

Well they can't one weekend, so you meet the next weekend. Or if the weddings in the evening, you meet in the morning. I don't think I'd cancel, but I can understand the expectation.

I actually didn't expect wedding vendors like the caterer, photographer, video, officiant etc to be available on the weekends because that's when a majority of weddings take place and I presumed they were at the event. Just as they would be at mine.
But I did expect reasonable accomodations for weeknights - not 10pm but a 7.30, 8.00 appointment was not unheard of.

I would love for you to try to figure it out, because it is impossible. Let's just face it, weekends are only OK in the winter, and we do accommodate then. When there's 25 weddings in a weekend, that last thing we can do is have appointments in our office.......it's very hard to understand.

I agree and in a service based business you must accomodate your clients. NOW if you were doing them a favor then yes, they should work around your convenience. I think when you are spen ding 15-25,000 on a wedding that the staff should be there to meet with you me at my convenience. JMO
