Went to a double funeral today
For Dr. Tedd carr and his wife whose lives were taken by that drunk driver.
Their 20 year old son spoke (wearing his parents' wedding rings around his neck,) and I wish his speech could be published somewhere. Never have I heard such an eloquent speaker, and such beautiful words.
he said to not base life on whether someone is breathing, walking around, with a beating heart, because there are many who are physically alive, but dead inside.
He said everytime an African American votes, Martin Luther King Jr. still lives, and everytime someone with autism gains skills and lives independently, that is his father still living, and everytime someone who was treated for depression by his mother, and continue to live, she continues to live.
He said for those angry at the drunk driver who killed them, to stop. Why waste another thought or your energy on someone you don't even know, when you can be thinking of all the good his parents did. And for everyone to go out and do good and not live in anger. do something to make a change, help someone else.
It was the hardest and most devsatating funeral I ever attended.

Thats what I said to someone there. His parents taught him well. What a gift for parents to do for their child - to teach them how to survive without them... At any age.

When I was reading about it on Newsday.com, I was also struck by how mature and eloquent he is. It's such a horrible tragedy.

OMG! So did I! I didn't even think of that until you wrote it! That was one of my favorite classes! (I originally wanted to be an early intervention evaluator)
ETA: His wife's name sounds very familiar- did she also teach at some point?

Re: Went to a double funeral today
Sounds like their son is as good a speaker as his dad. I didn't know the funeral was today. I know many people who wanted to attend, maybe it was private? I hope all who wanted to give their respect had the chance or can find another way to respect and remember.
Its terrible and hard to not be angry!

Its terrible and hard to not be angry! It was supposed to be close friends and family - I admit I wasn't close with him but I am with many that went. But otherwise, there will be another memorial in the fall for professors and collagues away for summer to pay their respects, I heard....

Re: Went to a double funeral today
Wow, what a remarkable young man!
It's so ironic because I recently wrote my victim impact statement to the person who hurt Kenneth. At the end, and I will post it on Kenneth's thread after the sentencing, I wrote about how this is it for me - after this moment, I will not think of him (the defendant) again. That horrible chapter is over for me, I have my closure/justice - and I will instead move forward and focus on Kenneth and his recovery. As well as helping other victims so they can feel comforted, helping brain injury victims, etc. So, when I read what you wrote above, it hit home for me.
I think there's a certain level of grief, upsetment, sadness, etc. for everyone who is a victim and their loved ones -- but, the real beauty is to try and see your way out of it. Otherwise, you punish yourself emotionally - you carry it with you. And believe me, the person responsible isn't carrying it - so why am I?
That being stated, it is easier said than done for many people - the hard liner on drunk driving today is the person who had their sister killed by one last night... and I understand that, I cannot judge the way in which a person grieves... but, many good things can come from terrible situations. I'm sure this young man will go on to do great things for so many. I hope that I have done some good things since Kenneth got hurt and I want it to continue - I want to help. When stuff like this happens you can grow a lot - I NEVER thought, in the first few weeks after Ken got hurt, I would be able to see any silver lining.
God Bless him and his parents!!!
They will be so proud of him!!

Re: Went to a double funeral today
I can't get this tragedy out of my mind. I have read their story in the paper countless times and it's just not fair that two good people had their lives taken away from them at such an early age. Their poor son had to bury both parents at 20 years old! I can't even imagine losing both at the same time. They seemed like such wonderful people, it is truly a shame.
