Westchester and the Bronx
I've expanded my apartment search to Westchester County and the Bronx.
Again, having lived my entire life on LI, I'm not very familiar with which areas are more desirable than others.
I know I wasn't very detailed in my last post so I will try to add some additional info here.
Rent wise, I'm looking to keep it within $1700 a month, if it includes utilities even better.
I'd prefer to a "building" situation vs. living in someone's home or a "house" situation.
Walking distance of transportation (especially the train) and shopping.
Lastly I'd like to stay within a 30-45 minute train ride radius of the city.
Again, any insight would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks everyone...

Very few apartment buildings in Country Club and Throgs Neck (most apartments are in private houses).
Riverdale is probably your best bet!
ETA: I grew up in TN and am very familiar with the Bronx so FM me if you have specific questions.
You can also try Woodlawn. Bronxville is very nice!

Re: Westchester and the Bronx
Bronxville is a really nice area, as is Scarsdale, Harrison, White Plains and areas of Mamaroneck. And they are all under 40 minute train into the city.

Re: Westchester and the Bronx
One thing to consider and not sure if it's worth anything to you, but if you have the option of Bronx vs Westch. dont forget that you will be subject to NYC or Yonkers income taxes if you live in the Bronx or Yonkers.

Bronxville is nice - it's in Westchester Co, not the Bronx.

Hope you are doing well
I wouldn't do Yonkers.
White Plains is ok.

Re: Westchester and the Bronx
In Westchester you can even look in Tuckahoe, Hartsdale, White Plains along Central Ave by the convention center, Larchmont, Eastchester, Bronxville.
I wouldn't do Yonkers, it's not like it used to be.....

Bronxville, Tuckahoe and Eastchester are on my short list of areas...aren't they considered Yonkers? LOL I'm telling you, the entire Westchester area confuses the hell outta me!!
Oh and also on my short list is: Hastings-on-the-Hudson, Tarrytown and Dobbs Ferry.
I know in the past Getty Square was a "no-no" is that still the case?
The Yonkers allure for me is that I could live right on the river (we're talking RIGHT on the river front) with what appears to be a beautiful riverwalk, shops and restaurants. I heard they were trying to revitalize the neighborhoods along the Hudson but again if it's not safe for me to be living there alone then it's just not going to work.

Re: Westchester and the Bronx
If you are going to look in Westchester and want an apt check out Avalon. My friend used to live in one of the Avalon buildings in New Rochelle. They are very nice
Avalon
ETA: She lived in the New Rochelle one. The area is up and coming but the surronding area where the buildings are is very nice. The Metro North is within walking distance. Her XH used to work there...I know you can try to negotiate the rent. The apartments were brand new, nice pool, lobby and alot of amenities. Good Luck!

Sweet niblets! Their one-bedroom is over $2300/month!
They're really nice but that's way out of my price range.

Thats for the one in Bronxville. They have other locations..I think the ones in New Rochelle start at 1500 and the ones in White plains at 1700.

Re: Westchester and the Bronx
No those are surrounding towns. DO NOT go to the waterfront in Yonkers, it is not a safe area at all. New Rocehlle is nice if you live in certain parts, but for the most part it's not a great town to live in.
Stick with the towns I listed they are great area in lower Westchester.
I lived in The Bronx and Yonkers for 18 years of my life so I am very familiar with the area.

FM my sister, Sweetsurprise09 / Val She lives in Throgs Neck but her husband has lived in the Bronx his whole life! She would be more than happy to help you with the Bronx (also Queens if you are interested there )
She also knows Westchester well, her OB was there and they shop in Westchester all the time!

Re: Westchester and the Bronx
Jennie Jennie - what are you looking for? Convenience factor? Tarrytown and White Plains should be where you focus especially for Metro North.
Don't do any luxury buildings in New Rochelle, Yonkers, WP - they are OVER PRICED and NOT worth it. They aren't well-built, trust me. They make you pay for everything, including parking and it will run you well over $2k per month.
You can get a super reasonably priced co-op. I live in one and WITH my utilities, I am spending well under your budget.
FM me about what you need - I'm familiar with every single town you've listed and when I was looking for a new place looked in Tarrytown, Hartsdale, Dobbs Ferry, Rye, White Plains, Irvington, Elmsford, Yonkers, Bronxville, Scarsdale, etc...

I don't know you but you can FM me too. I lived in lower Westchester for almost 10 years & spent 4 years in a bad neighborhood in the Bronx.
I have lived in Mt. Vernon ( Fleetwood-the nicer part), Scarsdale ( but really Eastchester, b/c Westchester is weird) and Hartsdale. Most of my friends live here too & my DH grew up here.
Pretty much anything near the Harlem line train stations from Fleetwood to North White Plians is decent. Once you get to North White Plains, your commute gets a little long.
In the Bronx, Woodlawn is nice--it is also a stop on the Harlem Line.
Crestwood is the stop between Tuckahoe & Scarsdale & technically it is part of Yonkers, but it is kind of fancy like Scarsdale, so it is the exception to the Yonkers is scary rule. Not a lot of rental buildings there though.
Also, there an area of Yonkers that has a a Bronxville PO that isn't scary.
My friends rented a condo in a complex between the Crestwood & Tuckahoe train stations (think the address was Tuckahoe) & it was very nice & very convienent.
A lot of what you will find are rentals in co-op & condo buildings, but there are some rental buildings.
There are also good areas on the other train lines, but this post is long enough!
I will say that I love Tarrytown & Sleepy Hollow and Irvington & Dobbs Ferry are also good Hudson line towns.
Had a bad experience in Hastings, but don't know too much about it.
Those areas are better than Yonkers if you want to live near the Hudson. You can take the Metro North down to Yonkers form thsoe towns & go to X20 ( fancy restaurant), with out having to live there!

Just my 2 cents but I lived in Yonkers for 37 years, my family still does, there are some parts that are still nice.

Re: Westchester and the Bronx
I lived in Riverdale for 5 years. It was a very easy commute anywhere since the #1 subway line an right up Broadway to 242 nd Street.
Very nice neighborhood, but it is a college town (I went to Manhattan College there).
My BIL/SIL live in Eastchester and previously lived in Tuckahoe by the Crestwood train station. Both nice areas.

Not sure how the area is now, but about 7 years ago my friend lived in Fleetwood and it was such a cute neighborhood!
she was in an apartment building and a couple of blocks from MetroNorth station
she was also in walking distance to restaurants, bars, nail salon, etc

I will definitely look into Fleetwood, this sounds exactly like what I'm looking for in an area. Thanks!

Jess...
At this point I'm not considering Brooklyn or Queens. I have nothing against the area it's just that my sister and her family (whom I'm very close to) lives in CT and having the opportunity to live closer to her, my BIL and niece and nephew is just something I don't want to pass up.
I'm hanging in there...things are progressing in a good way and hopefully will continue to advance so I can do this move once and for all! Thanks for asking momma
How are you and the little guy?
Oh and I got in touch with DB...
