What age did you give raisins as a snack?
I'm totally clueless about this for some reason- are they a choking hazard for a toddler? Kieran is almost 16 months old. I bought them yesterday thinking it might be a good snack, but now I'm second guessing that choice...

I started giving my kids raisins at about 11 months, she mainly drops them all over the house.

DD is 25 months and has not had them yet. I'm too nervous. But she had had raisin bran muffins and chewy granola bars with rasins. But the raisins are softer in those items

Re: What age did you give raisins as a snack?
I never gave them to my DS because he won't try them and my DD is 17 months and I have not given them to her because I thought they were a choking hazard.
But, I was just reading something on Babycenter.com that says the American Academy of Pediatrics removed raisins from their list of choking hazard foods in 2010 and that you can give your DC raisins when they are ready for finger foods.
I had no idea!

Re: What age did you give raisins as a snack?
Interesting. i was wondering the same bc the daycare he is going to in the fall serves oatmeal with raisins sometimes for breakfast. I was planning on trying to give them to him this summer so that I am comfortable with him having them there. DS is 14 months.

I just read the article and call ME crazy but I think they are INSANE to suggest offereing raisins to 7-9 mth olds!!!!!!
My DD was only eating purees at this age and I was worried enough about puffs and cheerios let alone raisins!!! Raisins, I am sorry I just don't agree with this (not flaming you btw just in that they suggest 7-9 mths old!!!).

Believe me, I was just as shocked as you when I read that. I guess the article said there are no documented cases of children choking on raisins... but for me, that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
It seems they are now more concerned with the fact that raisins stick in your teeth and can cause cavities!

Re: What age did you give raisins as a snack?
Thanks for all the input! And thanks for AAP article- I was trying to find what they said about it and couldn't! I'm surprised too that they recommend them so early! I gave them a shot tonight with Kieran and he did great with them. The ones I have him seem to be smaller than regular raisins (they are Nature's Promise) and he has always been a great chewer, despite his late appearance of teeth! At almost 16 months, he only has 4 top and 2 bottom! I think we'll keep trying them for a few days while watching him closely. Thanks again for the responses!

Re: What age did you give raisins as a snack?
I just asked Jack's feeding therapist this the other day. He is 21 months and she said it is fine to give it him. I'm still a little nervous though so I haven't tried it yet,

Re: What age did you give raisins as a snack?
Probably around 10 or 11 months I think
But seeing as I am in the minority of having given them early on....I did used to only give him 1 at a time at first. By a little over a year old, I would just be sure to break the clumps into individual raisins & he would go to town Never a choking hazard as far as I could see. One at a time, they are smaller then the choke tube tester my nurse friend gave me. So I always felt comfortable.

Re: What age did you give raisins as a snack?
Been giving them to K since about 14 months. She has almost every tooth except the incisors and chews well, so for us not an issue. I also give her craisins.

Re: What age did you give raisins as a snack?
I know the jury is still out about raisins being a chi king hazard but from a dental point of view we suggest limiting raisins in a child's diet. Raisins are very similar to gummy bears and other candies like that. They are loaded with sugar and the consistency allows them to get down into the groves of baby teeth and can quickly cause decay if they are eaten frequently. Always brush your little ones teeth as quickly as you can after a raisin snack.

Re: What age did you give raisins as a snack?
13 months. She doesn't get them a lot though because she tends to swallow them whole
ETA: She has no molars yet, only 8 teeth, but from what our ped has told us, their gums are just as hard as molars and enable them to break down their food just as well; she has had steak etc. without those molars.
