Re: What age do they start to learn and repeat the alphabet and numbers?

DS is 2 now and pretty good with numbers. He can count to 10 and knows some letters. He learned a lot in daycare.
He doesn't know all the letters. I think each child is different. Our cousin's daughter at 2 can identify all the letters and numbers. Then again those girls are advanced. Chat Icon

Yes, my mom has 4 daughters and always says girls are much more advanced. I hear it from her all the time. I think she's just biased! Chat Icon

I think kids in daycare are exposed to numbers and letters on a more regular basis, but my son is home all week, and he's really impressing me with what he knows.

DS is two and knows the alphabet song and his numbers up to ten. He can count objects up to ten but he can not reconize individual numbers or individual letters. My DN who is also two can identify all his number and letters including the sound they make. He has been watching the Leap Frog letter factory.

Wow that's really impressive! I guess my DS is on target then.

I bought the Leap Frog Letter Factory a couple of weeks ago after learning about it on here. I haven't taken the pastic off it yet. Guess I should do that soon! Chat Icon

Re: What age do they start to learn and repeat the alphabet and numbers?

My DS knew the alphabet song by 19 mos and to count to 10. By 21 mos he could recognize all the upper case letters and numbers 1-10. By 2 he could count and recognize numbers 1-20. He didn't get all the lower case letters until after 2 but before 2.5.

My DD started singing the alphabet song at 16 mos. She could count to 5 at 14 mos and, at 16 mos counts to 10. She doesn't recognize any of the letters yet and only recognizes some numbers.

DD is 20 months, can count to ten and knows her version of the alphabet song, which includes some version of "menomop" for "lmnop." We have the Leap Frog phonics things on the fridge and she likes playing with it. She is learning to identify the letters with its help.

DD is 20 months and recently started singing the abc's...but it goes like this: A, D, E, F, J...and sometimes she finishes it big with -OOOOO, lol...she counts to 4 correctly. She knows how to say other letters and numbers but not how to say them in order...and can't identify them yet. When she sees letters she shouts out a letter-but it usually isn't the correct one.

Re: What age do they start to learn and repeat the alphabet and numbers?

DS was counting to 10 and singing the alphabet song at around 2 years.

He started being able to indentify individual letters a few months before turning 3.

He does not identify numbers yet, but I think it is because we do letters more than numbers with him.

He can, however, count to 20 now.

Re: What age do they start to learn and repeat the alphabet and numbers?

DS is 15m and just starting to recognize some numbers and letters. We don't drill him, we don't watch videos or TV or anything. He's obsessed to pointing to things and asking "this?" so we tell him the letters and what they spell if he does. The letters he can say he does like "O" "Q" "E" "D" but he also says a lot of letters are "E" lol

As for numbers, he can't say words for numbers yet, except he does say one in Russian. He'll count his fingers and say "one one one one" lol

My mom also says girls are more advanced and wonders why DS is so behind Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ignore such people, all children learn at their own pace, if they aren't into letters and numbers, they are probably working on something much more important to them

Re: What age do they start to learn and repeat the alphabet and numbers?

DS was able to identify all 26 letters in the alphabet at 19 months. He's 20 months now and working on identifying numbers. But, he's a late talker so he's not saying the letters. He makes sounds when pointing at letters but that's it.

Re: What age do they start to learn and repeat the alphabet and numbers?

my son just turned 20 mos and I think we are behind on this.

he'll count if we count, and does know do his own countdown before he jumps or something, but he doesn't know that 1=one. he doesn't read numbers or letters (which is what I think you all mean by "identifying"

he doesn't even count on his own. he counts when I count. he'll say them but I don't think he knows he's counting, per se.

as for the alphabet, he's been singing his vowels for awhile, but again, he cannot read the abc's. he does sing the song a bit but not all of the letters.

not sure where he is in terms of normalcy, but this is what he does/knows.

Re: What age do they start to learn and repeat the alphabet and numbers?

DS is almost 3, if you ask him for a number, he'll say 2-9. Everything is 2-9. He'll try to say the numbers along with us as we count, but he doesn't get it yet.

He'll sing the alphabet with us, but mainly sings along to the rhythm. He can repeat letters back, but can't put them in order.

Re: What age do they start to learn and repeat the alphabet and numbers?

I think most kids get it at age 2. Some learn at an early 2. Others learn at a later 2.

At around 24m, DS could say all the letters. At around 26m, he could identify all the letters.
He's been counting to 10 for a while. I think he can go up to 14 now. Cannot identify any numbers yet but we haven't focused on that at all.

eta: I do find most girls seem more advanced than the boys we know. I think they all catch up around 4 or 5.

Chat Icon DD will be 20 months next week and sings "a, b,c,d,e..p..vvvvvvvvvvvvv" hahaha!

She can count to 6 clearly, and can identify A, B, D, F, P clearly.

Re: What age do they start to learn and repeat the alphabet and numbers?

DD has been singing the alphabet song since 19 months. It is not entirely clear but strangers get that she is singing the alphabet song. She can only say about 1/3 of the letters correctly but is in tune and tries all of the letters. She can also identify some colors as well. With all this said, DS who is almost 4 could do the same thing at the same age and then he "lost" some of the lower case letter identification skills only to be regain again when I emphasized it. Many of my friends say the same thing can happen. I would not worry to much right now. Everything you are doing now will help so much more when they are older.
