What age would you give gummy sour patch kids? (Daycare related with pic)

I have my 2 year old DS on a waiting list to start at my older DS's Montessori Preschool.

I just saw this pic of the 2 year old class having a party and this was their plates. Is it me or is 2 years old WAY too young for gummy sour patch kids?

I give my 2 yo gummy vitamins but only because his older brother takes them and he started pitching a fit that he wanted them and I literally cut them into FOUR tiny pieces!

I am super paranoid about my kids choking, (maybe because I went through a scary incident as a kid and my older DS choked once on spaghetti), and I was NOT happy when I saw these plates! Am I overreacting? Would you say something?

When I worked in a nursery school, they use to give the kids 2-4, Twizzlers, swedish fish, and jelly beans... I never remember there being a problem. They only did it on some holidays. Unfortunately, a toddler can choke on anything... It is a bit scary, but if you don't want your kid to eat stuff like that, then make sure you tell them. We had one kid who didn't eat the gummy like candy and it wasn't a big deal for them...

Thank you so much for your perspective. This was some kind of holiday party - I don't think it is an everyday thing (at least I hope not Chat Icon). I think I will say something to them prior to his enrollment. Thank you again for responding as someone who has BTDT!

I don't worry about it from a choking perspective but I hate that kind of stuff because of how bad it is for their teeth. We actually switch from the gummy vitamins because our dentist told us how bad they were.

once in a while, I guess, for a party. but that is it.

I would not be happy about this but not because of choking. I don't like my DS having any type of gummy candies even on special occasions. Mainly because it is horrible for their teeth. I would prefer them have chocolate.

I find it an odd choice to be honest.Chat Icon My DD is 4 and her preschool never has anything like that, even for parties.

Thank you! I didn't realize gummies were so bad for their teeth! Where have I been? Do fruit snacks fall into the same category then? Chat Icon

I'm anti candy mostly. I've lightened up a lot now that she's four but no way would I be 'ok' with gummy crap on her plate in school. I made a call about a ziplock bag that came home with popcorn in it. They said they do not serve the kids popcorn but if its given to them by another parent as part of a party thing, they let the kids take it home.

Valentine's is around the corner and I DREAD it! I hate all gummy snacks and I tell her they are pretend or toys but not be eaten and they all disappear that night. I see no reason ever for them. They are horrible for their (our) teeth and so we dont keep them in the house.

Thankfully I've been strict about this her whole life. Never "no" but other options provided. So now she'll turn down a gummy snack for a cup of cauliflower or her favorite pretzels, apples, grapes or strawberries. Why have fake fruit flavors when mama will give you the real stuff?

I'm finally throwing AJ a party, she'll be 4 and a half. The favor bags will have pretzels, goldfish and 100 calorie pack chessmen.

Chocolate is no good either but I've gone lax on that and allow it once in a blue moon. Her school knows I think it very irresponsible of them to allow such snacks. It is their policy not to allow them anyway. They recommend muffins instead of cupcakes and fruit instead of candy for parties.

Id be FURIOUS if I saw that photo at my kid's school. Id be wary and ask questions if it was a prospect school. They obviously see nothing wrong with if they post it on the internet. Such a shame.

My DD is 2 and I wouldn't let her have anything on that plate. She chokes VERY easily and I would absolutely speak to the teachers about it. They are 2. They do not need candy and cookies at a daycare party.

I would not be cool with that being served to my two year old! I'm extremely paranoid about choking also because I have had really bad experiences through the years working in daycare. My own dd recently was choking on a piece of chicken which was cut and extremely small. I don't believe in giving kids thOse type of extremely chewy candy which is hard for them to break down and swallow.

I'm surprised a preschool would give this at all much less a Montessori school. At my ds' Montessori school they are not even allowed to have goldfish. I know it's a little extreme but serving a two year old that crap at a school party or not is not cool.

All of my DC are allowed a reasonable amount of candy, and I have no problem with it at holiday parties, but with that said, NO WAY would I be OK with that at two. The cupcake, fine, but the gummy candies at TWO - NO WAY. That is SO dangerous (and unnecessary). When my DC were 2, where they attended, would sometimes serve cookies, but it was mostly goldfish, crackers, graham crackers, teddy grahams, that kind of thing.

I agree with many above. While my kids are allowed candy within reason, I find the candies on that plate inappropiate for a 2 year old. My daughter will be 2 next month and couldn't eat any of that. She still doesn't even have all her 1 year molars!!! ( Ihave 3 kids and none had all their 1 year molars by 2 - so you have to be super careful). My daughter only has 7 full teeth!!!! She would choke!!!! I would think a nursery school or day care center to be more conscious of that. I say those candies are ok at 4!

I'm pretty laid back about sweets, but that is a LOT of candy. Cupcakes, cookies, swedish fish, gummy worms m&m's? I can't tell but the pink stuff looks like melted ice cream. That's a lot of junk for 2yo's to be eating.

FOr a party...I wouldn't think 2x about it. As far as gummy things...my DS is 12 months and I wouldn't give it to him now but in 6 months I think he would be fine with supervision. My DS eats almost anything now with no issues so for me no I don't see it as an issue.
