What Americans Find Funny
I am a appreciator and collector of classic comedy from the 50's - 70's:
Abbott and Costello The Three Stooges Johnny Carson The Honeymooners Lucy
In watching some of this stuff and reading a book on one of the great comedy teams (Martin and Lewis), it occurs to me that truly great comedy is few and far between these days, and that comedians and shows rely on racy language and sex to get a laugh. Yes, in the past decade or so, a couple of gems have surfaced, such as Seinfeld, but where has all the great comedy gone?
Have today's writers lost their creative edge, or have we Americans changed what we find funny?

I feel the same way. Classic forms of comedy, acting, singing...the Arts in general are being lost to REALITY T.V! Let's not forget cartoons.

I love Warner Brothers!
ETA - I don't think that we necessarily have changed in what we think is funny because lots of the shows mentioned are still aired. I love that the WB does 24 hours of Honeymooners every New Year.

I think its a little bit of both
I do think that creativity is definitely out there.. BUT it seems to take 'shock value" to really stir things up these days. I think there is an audience for both BUT everyone likes th edgy comic who pushes the envelope rather than the humor you described from the past
Also the era of cable TV and uncensored DVDs has brought a new level of "anything goes" to the forefront. Often true originality and creativity takes a backseat to the easy laugh provided by foul language, sex jokes, etc.....

Re: What Americans Find Funny
i mean if you watch lucy, or **** van dyke, they all slept in separate beds. You knew they were married and sleeping together, but they never used that as a way to get laughs.
heck, on the honeymooners, you never even SAW the bedroom.
Now, it's like you can't have a successful show unless it:
1. features 22 minutes of sexual innuendo 2. has at least one homosexual character

Re: What Americans Find Funny
I do think a lot of the humor now is suggestive (even Seinfeld had its moments) but I sometimes love to watch "Whose Line is it Anyway." I think some of the bits they do on there are so genuinely funny and some of the comedians on there are talented in that Abbot and Costello type of humor.

Of course. I think about being younger & watching TV and not feeling so monitored by my parents. Now it's like I have to scan through everything Marissa watches & hears. Game shows are disappearing too. The good old days!

but even on that show, sex never played a role
and that was extremely difficult to pull off, with six kids running around

We were singing "kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit...." the other day. I was also trying to sing the Elmer Fudd version of that song "Fire", or as Elmer would say, "Fiwah"

IMO as of late, with all of the reality/celeb shows.... IMO it is the public that is now dictating what is on TV...
It is the people who have no interest in the "old school" sitcoms...
