Re: What are your feelings on high ranches?
LOVE!
But I also live in a cape-ish style house that is small and we feel we can't do anything with.
My ILs and DH's aunt both have one and they are so spacious.
Both having seperate living spaces downstairs and the upstairs feels so much roomier than our little house.
Hopefully one day we can do a switcharoo and rent/sell our place and buy off them.
Only complaints I have heard from family is that since they are older now, they feel they have "too much house" to take care of. But since having grandchildren, I haven't heard this as much since the downstairs is good living space for the kids.
They both lived in smaller before buying their high ranch (aunt lived in an apartment, ILs had a Levitt house).

While many people dont like them if it's a desirable area and nice house, it WILL sell. Location is still key. I am not a fan of them but never ruled them out.
This... Make sure it has a 2 car garage as it will be even more desirable...

I grew up in a high ranch, but it's the one style of home that when we were house-hunting we wouldnt even look at.
I don't like the idea of all the bedrooms being right on the main level barely down the hall from the livingroom and kitchen. The layout just doesnt suit our needs. I much prefer capes and colonials.

Based on location another concern is that any living space that is underground will generally NOT be covered by insurance as it will be deemed a basement, regardless of what you use it for.
There was a huge article about this a few weeks as many people were using their lower level as the kitchen and after Sandy found out the hard way they were not covered at all.

I don't care for them and we didn't look at them when house hunting. I grew up in a cape and a colonial and this is what feels "right" to me, haha.
I don't think it would be that hard to resell, there are obviously many people who DO like them. There are definite pro's to them.

Re: What are your feelings on high ranches?
Thanks for all your input. We decided to pass on the house, not because it was a high ranch - there were other deciding factors involved. I'm not too excited about continuing the house hunt.
