Those with high ranches - baby proofing
For those with high ranches, how did you baby proof the stairs? I'm not sure if I should get a gate that is right at the top of the stairs or should I try to find an expandable gate that will fit my kitchen opening (76"). Any suggestions? Here are some pics so you can see what I mean. Image Attachment(s):

any high ranch i have been to has a gate at the top of the stairs
eta - i don't see a pic
ETA Again - I would without a doubt get a gate at the top of the stairs.
They also custom make gates so that they will match your railing. My friend has a similar railing - and it looks great!

We have the stairs gated, and even gated the kitchen too. We figured there's too much for him to get in trouble with in the kitchen, so he just can't access it.

I feel like your kitchen opening is too big to gate off. We had the babyproofer come and do all of our cabinets - he can't get into a thing (and neither can anyone else for that matter - besides me )

Your kitchen opening is not too big, you just have to get a specific gate for it. It's $$, like $100, but it will be big enough. We had it blocking off our dining room when our china was on display. Now we just use it to block off a very small corner area where our liquer is stored.

Thanks ladies. I did find an expandable gate on One Step Ahead that would fit my kitchen opening. I will also get a gate for the top of the stairs that can attach to railings.

Re: Those with high ranches - baby proofing
I have a wideline high ranch, and the opening to my kitchen is only a door-width wide. But since we have a wideline, we put our gate across the hallway by the kitchen opening, before you get to the stairs (our stairs have no gates on them at all). I'll see if I can dig up a picture. We had to get a gate extension because a regular date wasn't wide enough.

My MIL has the same stiars and she has a gate mounted that swings open.
