what are your thoughts about this..re: gastric bypass surgery
Got in to a discussion with a group of peopel about people who have the surgery and loose a ton of weight VS people who diet and excrcise and do it themselves. One person said they have more respect, for lack of a better word, for people who do it on their own rather than surgery bc with the surgery you have no choice but to loose it.. you cant eat as much as you did before once you have thr surgery.. thoughts?

Re: what are your thoughts about this..re: gastric bypass surgery
I have a family member who did this. He struggled with his weight ALL his life, since he was about 8 yrs old. He is now 38.
Either diet and exercise or surgery, it doesn't matter to me he still has my respect of doing it. He's healthier today for it. He's kept the weight off for over 2 yrs now. He's in a better place in his life right now and happier than he's ever been.

I am not sure if I consider gastric bypass as not losing the weight yourself. There are sacrifices to be made for the surgery and in the years that follow.

Re: what are your thoughts about this..re: gastric bypass surgery
Speaking as somone that had the surgery, it was the BEST thing I ever did for my health. I was borderline dabetic, heart problems, swelling in my legs and various other weight related problems. I lost a total of 187lbs (and still looking to lose about another 40lbs) and i regained my life.
I tried every diet out there. Forget about exercising...I couldnt even walk, nevermind trying to exercise.
Its a big misconception that its the "easy" way out but if you saw how little I could eat, and how all kinds of food turned my stomach, you wouldnt wish that on anyone.
I now have my life back. I can walk into a room with my head held high and not thinking that everyone was looking at me. I go to the gym at least 3 times a week, and dont worry that Im the "fat girl" trying to use the machines!
I eat more now (3.5 years after surgery) than I did right after surgery but no wheres near what I did before I had surgery.
AS far as the respect factor, unless you have walked in that persons shoes, no one should "judge" someone that chooses to go this route to lose weight. I know if I didnt do this for MYSELF...I might be sick or worse now!!

Re: what are your thoughts about this..re: gastric bypass surgery
Anyone who can lose weight by dieting and exercising is to be commended as it is a huge accomplishment it requires discipline, structure, and willpower...
That being said, people who make the decision to have weight loss surgery in many cases do so because they have already tried the diet and exercise route and it did not work, or they have a medical condition that makes the surgery necessary.
I know 5 people personally who have had weight loss surgery all with varying degrees of success..To me there isnt an issue of diet and exercise vs. weight loss surgery because the people who make the decision to have the surgery have many adjustments to make before, during, and after the surgery which require the commitment and discipline and complete life change..it is in no way a quick fix....

If its someone who has a genetic predisposition towards being heavy, and having health problems, then I support it. A family friend had gastric bypass. But if you just really like McDonalds, then no! Get your heiney to a gym...

I completely agree with this. I am for this surgery 1000%!!! it was a life changer for one of my close friends, she had plenty of struggles after the surgery- you don't keep the weight off without eating better and exercising even after the surgery. she has had so many triumphs- physically & emotionally since the surgery over 4 yrs ago- I couldn't be happier for her!!

I'm all for it. Those that have the surgery have to make major life changes in order for it to be successful. One must change the way they eat and view food. I know a few people who've had the surgery and have been able to keep the weight off because they've committed themselves to being healthy and work out regularly.

I tend to have more respect, for lack of a better word, for someone who actually knows what they're talking about before they decide who's actions are or aren't worthy of their praise.
My dad is getting it done. He's already lost 200 pounds on his own, but still has a way to go. He's getting it done for many reasons, the main ones being to lose the rest of the weight that he needs to lose before he can get his knee/hip replacement. And the other is to keep the weight off. No matter how many times he has dieted, it has always found a way back onto his body. He's 61 and doesnt want to play that game anymore.
It's easy for people to say to just diet and exercise when they've never been in a person's shoes who's tried every diet and exercise under the sun. My father can't exercise, he can't even walk. Still, he has found ways to work with what he's got, and that makes me respect him more than i could ever imagine.

Re: what are your thoughts about this..re: gastric bypass surgery
I am for it.
I am someone that has battled my weight my entire life. My weight has been a constant source of emotional turmoil for me that has effected my self-esteem. Thankfully, I am not heavy enough to have serious health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes, etc. but i look at all the timesi have lost those 30-50 pounds over and over and over again and still struggle, I can only imagine what it is like to have to keep off 100+ pounds. for some people, it's a battle they just can't win for a variety of reasons.
Although i don't have the amount of weight to lose that would warrant a gastric by-pass surgery, but I know how extremely difficult it is to lose the weight and most importantly, keep it off. People that need these surgery usually must be at least 100 lbs. overweight and already have major health problems due to the weight. Clearly many of these people have dieted on and off for years and have probably lost a good deal of weight, but just cannot keep it off. These people need help to, in some cases, literally save their lives and if some of them surgery needs to be the answer, I am fine with that.
For someoen that has struggled with my weight, it is hard. and yes, one must learn how to eat properly, to see their eating for what it really is (a psychological problem, for example) and to exercise and learn how to manage food. However, there are some people that cannot do this for the long term. So although I support the surgery for some, i think it MUST be done with counseling before and after. I know people have had this surgery and although they lost the weight, they still struggle with the issues and feeligns of self-hatred that caused them to gain weight in the first place. in addition, many of them also struggle with what it is like to be finally thin...and feeling that people only like them or find them worthy because they are finally "attractive." that is also a huge psychological blow and they need the support after the surgery as well.
i hear you with people that say they don't have "respect" for people that get the surgery and don't do it themselves, but who are we to judge? Would we judge an alcoholic who had to go to AA to get sober? We wouldnt' say, "oh, do it yourself!"

Re: what are your thoughts about this..re: gastric bypass surgery
As someone else who had this surgery just about 6 years ago and maintained her 115 pound weight loss up until her pregnancy (which is right now) I am awfully tired of having to justify my actions as an adult.
The procedure saved my life and my future. I have never been healthier and happier.
If a person wants to lose weight and make a lifestyle change, good for them. The methods they choose to do it, as long as they are legal are nobody's business.
For what it's worth, I got more support from thin people before my procedure than heavy people. That is the cold hard truth.
I think a person has to spend some times in someone else's shoes before passing judgment. If you think it is the easy way out, then you are grossly misinformed.

I'm actually very surprised by this. I wonder if it's just the people that you were surrounded by, or if there's underlying feelings there. I guess because my dad has become like the team captain in his nsg home, that whenever there's other patients in his similar situation, he does all that he can for them and is so extremely supportive.
I think everyone should be supportive, but especially those that know how hard that life is. That's shocking and unfortunate.

I was surprised when i read that too... you would think there would be some empathy.
However, i am sure that some heavy people felt jealous because maybe they would have liked to have the surgery to, or perceived it as a "quick fix."

Re: what are your thoughts about this..re: gastric bypass surgery
I'm all for it. My dad had it in 2004 and it was by far the best thing he ever did in his life. It is a whole new lifestyle that you have to live and adjust too.
This surgery is like a last resort...when all else fails. My dad has tried every diet. He has lost weight and put it right back on. Nothing worked. This was his last resort.
There are side effects that must be taken into consideration.
You have to be ready for this "new life" psychologically
And you CAN gain the weight back if you go back to eating the way you used to. There are people out there who have the surgery 3-4 times (ifthey can find a dr to do it) Some people look at it as an easy fix, but it is anything but easy
eta: my dad went from 365 lbs...diabetic, high cholesterol, high blood pressure..he couldnt even tie his shoes. hes now about 230 lbs and totally off all meds. everything is controlled. He gets so excited when he can sit down and bend down to tie his shows...that is such an accomplishment!

You are right, it IS unfortunate. My thin friends were supportive. My heavy ones were not. Some are still not and this is 6 years later. They tell me I could never "mutilate my body" just to get thin, meanwhile they can barely walk and breathe but MY body has been mutilated.
There are plenty of "healthy" heavy people in this world. For many years, my mother was one of them. Then came the diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. When she told her doctor she "was never sick", we asked him how long it took for a person to develop the health problems that she had. His response? 20 years. To me, that is 20 wasted years that I was not willing to sacrifice. I had a life to live and I was too young to be stuck in a body that was unhealthy. I wanted to one day have children and live long enough to see them grow up. I did not want to be a diabetic with heart disease (both of which ARE hereditary) who died before she was ready. Sadly, that was my mother's fate. That being said, There is no question, I made the right choice for myself. It was not about vanity. Vanity was a benefit.
This may rub some people the wrong way, but the heavy people in my life were not able to make peace with their weight issues and it was easier for them to trash me, then to do something (surgery or otherwise) for themselves. Then a couple years later, when they were ready, they made their changes. I supported them.
To this day, I maintain regular contact with my surgeon - particularly in regard to my anemia (common for bypass patients) during pregnancy, malapsorption issues and proper nutrition before delivery and while breast feeding. I consulted him before I got PG as well.
Bottom line, gastric bypass is a LIFE LONG COMMITMENT. You dont have surgery lose weight and thats it. You need to still eat properly, exercise and supplement your diet with vitamins or you can become lethargic and ill.

Re: what are your thoughts about this..re: gastric bypass surgery
Why is that the easy way out? You could become very ill after surgery you can't eat normally (I mean like you did before not normally my brothers girlfriend had it she takes 2 bites of something and shes done. But look what i just did I said normally like eating a lot is normal) ever again if you eat to much you get very sick you need to exercise etc etc etc.
This is something I have been thinking about for years now. I have a great friend who had lap band and they did awesome with it!! Im thinking about that also.
Sure anyone can diet (I have done it several times) but the problem is the weight always comes back.

Re: what are your thoughts about this..re: gastric bypass surgery
I think anyone who has tried to lose weight via excercise & change in eating habits (not a diet) is admirable.
My assumption is that anyone who has gastric bypass has tried & failed to lose weight on their own. This is a life changing choice & can save someone's life - whether it was lack of willpower or genetic disposition that prevented them from losing weight, it doesn't matter.
Gastric Bypass isn't a quick fix nor do I feel it's entered into lightly. It is a major surgery. My friend had to go through months of counseling sessions & lose weight before the surgery. She also had to change her eating habits & start excercising too. She can't go out & eat like she used to - it makes her sick if she does.
It's a decision to live a better and more healthier life. I don't know how anyone can find fault with someone who makes that decision.

Amen, Lisa. As another Gastric patient, I was suicidal pre-surgery. There was nothing (and I mean nothing) that could change my battle with weight. I had struggled with obesity since adolescence. My weight was not only affecting my personal life, it was affecting my health. My back and legs were in so much pain on a daily basis, there was times were I felt I couldn't stand. I hated visiting friends because I felt like the circus freak (aka fat lady) and I was ridiculed on a regular basis by my STBX. I always felt under the microscope by friends, family, peers and perfect strangers because of my weight. There was more than once I drove down to the Ocean Parkway bridge and seriously contemplated jumping.
November 2006 was the restart of my life. I can honestly say I have never been happier or more satisfied with my body. Losing 120+ pounds was like shedding the chains of pain and humiliation I was enslaved in for 3/4 of my life. Within me, I found a whole different person; stronger, confident, OK with myself.
I went to a BBQ this past weekend. There was a guy there I haven't seen in three years. Now mind you, I always had a hidden crush on him (thought he was hot) but he would never give me the time of day (outside of being politically polite because of our mutual friendship with the hosts). Let me tell you, he was ALL over me; throwing compliments in my direction, trying to pull me away for private conversations, etc. Problem was, he didn't remember me. He thought I was some "hot new chick" on the scene. Idiot didn't realize that he's known me for YEARS. When he realized WHO I was, he was floored! It was a total turn off for me (even though I'm not in the market anyway) because he wouldn't give the time of day to the "fat chick" back a few years ago, but the remodeled version (complete w/a boob job) he was interested in. Next!! Still, it felt good and it felt good to get the praise of ALL of my male friends after 20+ years of them looking at me like the "fat chick". I NEVER want to be that person again, ever. You can call it the easy way out; I call it the only option besides death for me.

I think it comes down to putting down other people for doing something "in a different way".
I think doing something to get healthy is better than nothing. Whether it's surgery or not.

Unfortunately I am not at all surprised by this - go to the weight watchers 100+ pounds to lose board, bring up weight loss surgery and you will be flamed to no end. For some reason people always feel that their way is not only the best way, but the only way. I can't understand how we can be so technologically advanced and not understand that every person is different and every human body is different.
I have been on a diet since I was 8, I have always been heavy. In my adult life I have been up as high as 300 lbs and down as low as 190. Last year I was running 3-4 days a week (and walking 3 miles every day at noon at 4-4.5 MPH), I went from running for 1 minute spurts to running for 45 minutes straight - that was a HUGE accomplishment for me. Over the course of the 3 months it took me to do that I lost 5 lbs! I went from 230 to 225 and I was following weight watchers to the T. It is frustrating when your body doesn't do what everyone says it should.
I have considered weight loss surgery, but have not made the decision to do it because I am afraid of it - I know it isn't a walk in the park, the surgery alone could kill you and then the recovery is awful. I don't see it as an easy way out, I see it as a tool to save lives. No one goes into it not having tried to lose the weight on their own, it is usually a decision that has been agonized over for a very long time.
No one would judge someone for getting bypass surgery (which is generally a completely preventable disease!) so why do people feel they can judge others for weight loss surgery?
Honestly I think people just feel it is OK to judge fat people because they feel they are lazy and "they have done it to themselves" if only they knew the truth.

I have been thinking about this all night and you are so right! I got alot of grief from my heavy friends most of them making comments like "I would never have this surgery" but funny thing is....most of them did have the surgery and thank me for doing it and giving them the strength to go through it themselves!!
