What are your thoughts on this (Bat Mitzvah related - but really party related)
We went to my niece's bat mitzvah today. They did the huge party for her... It was very nice. My nephew (her brother) is 10.
As we were leaving the party, there was a huge blow up picture of him that said "Next up in 2013"
I thought that was completely unnecessary - everyone knows the kid is going to have a bar mitzvah in 3 years, and it wasn't nice to take away from her day. They make such a big deal over their son all the time as it is and think the sun rises and sets over him, and thought it was tacky and not fair to her.
What are your thoughts?

Honestly, I just find it really weird - and yes, unnecessary. How strange!

I think that that's inappropriate and not fair to the bat mitzvah girl-- unless the kid was having a huge stink about all the attention being on his older sister.
I guess it depends on the family dynamic.
If that did that to make him feel a part of things, that's one thing-- but, if it was just to put the spotlight on the kid that always has it anyway-- not fair to the daughter.

That is completely wrong IMO. It is her day. To me that is like having a huge poster of the boy at her wedding saying he is next. It is just WRONG. I feel so badly for this girl. She must have such an inferiority complex. I really hope someone says something to her parents. Their behavior was disgusting.

She must have such an inferiority complex. I really hope someone says something to her parents. Their behavior was disgusting. she actually has a huge inferiority complex. And no one is going to say anything to the parents because they think everything they do is perfect.
Even if the kid was having an issue with her getting attention that day (and he was acting silly during pictures so it was clear he was) he is 10 - not 2.
I'm glad you guys agree - I have been to tons of Bar and Bat Mitzvahs with younger siblings and never saw that before in my life!

Well, she was planning her daughter's bat mitzvah when DH and I were planning our wedding. We just celebrated our 3rd anniversary in June, so We were planning a year in advance (and my parents made a big deal about us doing everything so "soon" when my stepsister was looking at DJ's and her kid was 9!!!!)

ITA with you...I know that my DH went to private school (yeshiva) and in the more orthodox belief of judaism they don't believe in even making a BAT Mitzvah for a girl and just a Bar Mitzvah which annoys me to no end, bc he doesn't want to do one for DD (obviously we have a few years to discuss this), but don't take away from the daughters celebration, I totally agree wtih you, I think it steals her moment that she should have!

Bizarre, if you ask me. At all of our bat/bar mitzvahs our parents took a cool picture of us, blew it up and put it outside the party room so people could sign it.
I think I would have been really put off if they put a big picture of one my brothers instead. I've never heard of such a thing

I always plan to wash my hair for the next 3 years... so it's always helpful to know what might be coming up so it doesn't interfere.

100% wrong. It takes a lot of dedication and study to prepare for a Bat/Bar Mitzvah. They totally stole her thunder. Id have been devastated for her.

Without knowing the family dynamic, I'd say the parents may have been spending a lot of time on the party and the Bat Mitzvah for his sister, and since he's a little kid, they may have wanted to include him.
Sort of like when a new baby is born and you give a gift to any older siblings as well. Because it's nice to recognize that they're there also.
I never had a Bat Mitzvah, so I couldn't say what's right or wrong, but I wouldn't be offended with the picture being displayed at the end of the party.

Well....I didn't have a Bat Mitzah, but I kinda don't think its so wrong to include a younger sibling like that.
To play devil's advocate, how do you know that in 3 years, they won't say "Coming in 2018, XYZ's Graduation Party" for the girl?

I guess not knowing the family dynamics that would make sense. But they do everything for their son - they have him involved in a travel hockey team and they travel all over the state with him. He isn't left out of anything and they have already been building him up about his bar mitzvah... They always make a big deal about him and make her feel like crap. And it shows in her whole demeanor.
