What are you’re thoughts on starting the baby out in the crib?

I am paranoid when they are first born and like them in the bassinet right next to me but DH thinks it’s a waste and wants to put him right in the crib. His room is right next to ours but I just don’t feel comfortable. Did anyone else go right for the crib and skip the bassinet?

That's what I did. Made my life SO much easier.

So long as you have a great monitor, you'll be okay. Chat Icon

Re: What are you’re thoughts on starting the baby out in the crib?

We only did the bassinet for 2 wks (DS outgrew it). The ONLY reason we did the bassinet was b/c it was the bassinet my mom used for me and my brother. If we did not have that, then DS would have gone right to the crib.

I started Steven in the crib, and it was the best thing I ever did!

Re: What are you’re thoughts on starting the baby out in the crib?

We had Ali in the bassinet for 3 days (if even that) and then we put her in the crib. Since our room was sooooo small, we would hear every noise, we weren't sleeping at all.
So in the crib she went and we all slept sooo much better

We are definitely doing it with the next one

I had Chelsea in her bassinet until she was 3 months old. It was a comfort thing for me and I liked her being right next to my bed. We didn't have any problems sleeping with her in the room. Last week we finally put her in her crib only after I got a video monitor. Again it is a personal choice on what you are comfortable with.

DD went right into the crib the first night and so will DS. Their rooms are right near mine and I have the video monitor set up in both rooms.

She LOVES her crib and asks to go in it at night and will only nap (when she naps) in her crib.

We never used the bassinet we had for DS, and never put it back together for DD. IMO, the less transitioning, the better. The less they have to get used to. They will get used to what you put them in, in other words, they have no idea what they like, they like what they are familiar with. Both my kids started in the crib and were great sleepers.

Re: What are you’re thoughts on starting the baby out in the crib?

i started DD in a bassinet, by the time she was 6 weeks she was in her crib.

now that i'm pregnant with twins, they'll be going straight into the crib, just bcause of the logistics of trying to get two bassinetts next to my bed

We put both DC in their cribs in their own rooms from the first night. They never had a problem with it, and with the monitor, you can actually hear them better in the other room, since the monitor is amplified.

We put them both right into the crib. We didn't want two babies in our room, and didn't want to have to make the transition when they were older.

They both did great being in there right away.

DH also wakes up at 2:30am for work, so we didn't want a baby waking him before he had to get up either.

Re: What are you’re thoughts on starting the baby out in the crib?

i'm all for putting the baby in the crib immediately... however with DS I didnt do that... one reason..his room wasnt ready yet...and two... I was in so much pain after delivery, that there was no way i could keep getting in and out of bed frequently every 2 -3 hrs ..too much pain...and my bed was so high , it was just too painful, I kept DS in a bassinet in the living room and i slept on the sofa it was just easier for me.
however when i decide to TTC with #2, if I'm doing great after that delivery I'd prob only keep that baby in my room for 2 wks and then move them to their bedroom in the crib.
monitors are great!

I say if you are both comfortable with it, start the crib right away. But it sounds as if you are not, so maybe the bassinet for a certain period of time. Talk to DH and limit it--maybe to 2 months or so.

I had DS in a bassinet until a little over 3 months, but he slept in his crib during the day for naps, so when we put him in the crib, there were no problems.

Right in the crib for me.

Then there is no "transition" time trying to get him/her used to something new when you do move to the crib.

Re: What are you’re thoughts on starting the baby out in the crib?

I am going against the consensus here and I would say that I wouldn't put a newborn in the crib from the beginning.

DD slept in our room in a PNP when we first brought her home. At about 2 1/2 months she started with reflux and the ONLY way that we knew she had it was that twice in the middle of the night she stopped breathing and started thrashing next to me. I really don't know if I would have woken up to the movement if I had heard it through a monitor.

I knew from the moment that I woke up that something was horribly wrong and I was able to pick her up and tap her back to get her breathing again. The doctor said that she probably would have started breathing again on her own, but for me it wasn't worth the risk. We kept her in our room until she was 6 months and I knew the reflux was under control with medication.

Needless to say, any future kids will be bunking with us for a while at the beginning.

I don't think that there is a right or wrong answer to whether it is better to start in with you or in their own room, however I am a BIG believer in the mommy gut feeling and I think that you should go with whatever makes YOU most comfortable. Chat Icon

Re: What are you’re thoughts on starting the baby out in the crib?

I only put them in the crib for naps until they were 4 months. For me, it was easier to have them right next to me at first since I was breastfeeding.

If you are comfortable with it sure why not - for me I wasn't all that comfortable with it and I was BFing so it would have been much more of a pain to have her in another room.

Re: What are you’re thoughts on starting the baby out in the crib?

DS hated the bassinet, so on day 2 he slept in his crib and has been there ever since.....
Get the video monitor and you'll be set!!!
