What brand pots and pans do you have?

I need a new set, and I have a $650 gift certificate to macy's. everyone seems to rave about all-clad and calphalon, but are they really worth it? anyone have experience using these pots and pans vs. cheaper sets?

Re: What brand pots and pans do you have?

I got an Analon set for my shower, and CANNOT wait to break that box open and cook with them. After years of using cheap pots, I can almost guarantee that you would be happier investing in a top-quality set that you will have for a long time!!!!!

I have a set from Costco (Kirkland Brand) that I got six years ago and I absolutely love them. They are really heavy and they are just really good!

Re: What brand pots and pans do you have?

my one piece of advice is to not buy a set but to buy open stock- you don't need everything that comes in the set and different brands are good for different things.

For that budget you can get a few really great pieces.

I would say everyone should have a cast iron skillet- I use mine for EVERYTHING- it holds heat the best- yes, it's a little high maintenance- but there is nothing like it for searing meat.

Second to that is an enameled case iron dutch oven- I have a 4.5 quark le crueset- again, something I use ALL the time. They have a Le Creuset 5 Qt oval for $185.00.

I would also get a 12-14 inch chef's skillet (Calphalon seems to be great & it cleans VERY easily- i have a roasting pan that cleans very well)- some of them have the non-stick- others are pure stainless- i always think it's good to have one of each.

I like grill pans- I have one that flips (one side is a grill and one side is flat for pancakees- it's great b/c it sits over two burners).

A big stock pot is a must- there is a calphalon pasta set on sale right now at Macy's which includes the colander insert- that seems like a good value @ $59.99

A roaster- I have the All-Clad petite roaster- is is AMAZING i use it all the time and it's about $175

YOu probably need a 1.5-2 quart sauce pan and maybe one bigger than that too.

anyway- that's what I would do- sometimes w/ the sets you get things you never use that take up space and not every brand is the best for every type of pot.

Of course you can always get bakeware too!

I have some cuisenart pieces and they are great.
as I posted above- my most often used pieces are:

case iron pan
le creuset french oven
2 cuisentart sauce pans
all clad roaster
1 cuisenart stock pot

everything else just takes up space.

Re: What brand pots and pans do you have?

We have Farberware, which we registered for because all the others were so expensive. I hate it. We have been slowly getting Calphalon to replace the Farberware. Amazon has sales on Calphalon all the time and we are buying one piece at a time. It's worth the investment!

I agree with this. that's why we registered for the small 7-piece set of Emeril cookware, not the bigger one. we added a few extra pieces that we wanted.

I bought a HUGE set of cookware many yrs ago and never used some of the pieces.

Great advice. I totally agree with this. This is how I buy my pots and pans and have most of the same things. I have a good selection of Le Cruset which I love for soups, stews, chilis. Cusinart for sauteeing and pan searing. Non-stick for eggs and grilled cheese and the like.
