What can i do to help with rolling over, and sitting up.

DD is 5 1/2 m old and she still has not rolled and not sitting up unassisted. Is there something im suppose to be doing to help her? DH said shell do it on her own at her own time, but i feel like im not doing the right things to help her get strength to do. We do play on floor alot. Im afraid of her falling behind on her milestones. Could something be wrong that she hasnt done yet. I keep seeing moms posting that there dc has done, and they are younger than my dd.

DS is 6 months and has no interest in sitting up. I think all you can do is a lot of tummy time and time on the floor.

I used the boppy pillow behind her to help my her sit up and let her play with some toys in front of her.

If you want to try some things my doctor had suggested:

Rolling Over
- Get down on the floor with your DD and lay her down. Roll her from one side of the room the other and make sure to laugh and sing while doing. Show her that it's fun. Give her opportunities to try it her self and maybe put her in a semi-roll position so that her movement will complete the roll. It might help her in terms of feeling what it's like and how to do it. I also used to put toys a little further away and roll DS towards them...put them in his hand like he got them. Once he let the toy go I would put it somewhere else to see what he would do. Eventually he started to realize he could roll to get to it.

Sitting Up
- Best thing to do is sit her up on your lap whenever you can and to sit her up independently on the floor as often as you can. Put toys in front of her...soon she will understand that this new position gives her a new view and makes it easier to get her toys...she'll take to it quickly. Just be sure to be near her - they wobble before they fall. Too cute.

You are already doing floor time, which is great. DD doesn't sit up unassisted either and her head is even wobbly still at times and she had great neck control from Day 1. As far as rolling over, our pediatrician told us to practice tummy to back so when she pushes herself up on her arms (if she does), wave a toy in her peripheral vision and she will follow it and roll over. Well, it worked! She has done it 3 times on her own now without the toy BUT won't do it regularly. I was worried too but I realized, they will do things when they are good and ready! All we can do it encourage them and practice! Chat Icon

Re: What can i do to help with rolling over, and sitting up.

My DD didn't sit up at all until a little after 6 months. One of the things that helped DD though was sitting her on a crochet blanket (the one's with the holes...I hope you KWIM). She would hold onto the blanket to help hold herself up.

She also didn't roll over until around the same age. I used to help push her over a bit. She would stick her arm by her side (coincidentally in the beginning) and lean to one side and I would gently push her over to her belly and say "Weeee", like it was a game. She loved it!! Eventually she started to do it on her own.

Tina,

Our kids are the same age so I'm sure you'll relate. DS refuses to roll over period. My SIL and I are basically standing on our heads lol to try to get this boy to be a little more mobile and roll over...no. He likes to arch his back and pick himself up with his feet while laying down but will not roll over. We roll him around, try to motivate him with toys, etc. for which he reaches out but will not roll over. With the sitting though, he is basically sitting up unassisted at this point. He is still a little wobbly and I have to watch him but for the most part he is getting there.

Honestly though, and Im sure your ped told you the same thing, kids reach their milestones at a different pace so as long as your ped is not concerened, I really wouldn't stress it that much either.

ETA: HAve you tried putting her in the Bumbo seat or the exersaucer? My son does not liek to lay down and so I switch him around from his Bumbo, to the Jumperoo, to the exersauser or to his highchair.

Don't worry, I was all excited about Parker rolling cuz he did it several times in a row, now he hasn't done it for a week, silly boy. We are still working on sitting up. He loves to, and does get better every day, but needs a lot of assistance. Babies go at their own speed, I understand your worries, but some good suggestions were made, ones I will try too!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

i put her on floor and do everything and anything to get her attention, shell roll on her side but thats it. sitting, i put her in position and then she falls.

i put her in all three, bumbo seat-im going to put the tray on today and see if that gets her more into it, jumparoo-- she likes it, plays with her toys, but doesnt understand how to work it..she likes me to make her bounce wont do herself, exersaucer- she loves, that shes getting better at.

No worries then...give her time. Sounds like she is doing just fine!

Re: What can i do to help with rolling over, and sitting up.

i sat DS in the bumbo seat a lot right before he learned how to sit up. He started sitting up at 5 months. i would also sit him up on the couch as well. Give him a lot of time on his tummy to help with the rolling over. We started tummy time at 6 weeks.
