what did/do you and your partner have to do *first* before TTC

I know no one is ever really *ready* but, I was just wondering what's on everyone's list of things to do before TTC.

DH and I are tying to finish our degrees.
We're also moving OOT.
And we're going to get a puppy!

What about you?

We got a puppy too - that is such good practice for becoming parents!

I had to quit my job in the city before even thinking about starting a family bc there was no way I could have done my last job and been a mom.

I would like to be more established in my new career before I have kids but we'll see what happens.

Getting married and taking a European honeymoon.

Seriously, at 35 and 37 (when we married) there was no more time to wait. There was nothing more important or that we wanted more than to become parents. 16 months later we are still trying... glad we didn't wait and glad we didn't spend a lot of $$$ on things because it's going to IVF now.

1 - get a job that is much more mommy friendly. (isn't it a shame we have to do that???) I'm am finding that you really can't have your cake and eat it too

2 - have the DH come around. Now that we are ready, he is getting scared about being a dad

I had to think about this one for a bit. Actually, there is nothing we have/want to do before a baby. We did all that before we were ttc. Right now, we are ready.

We just wanted a little bit of married time with each other before a baby came. We went to Ireland too. Otherwise, we didn't really feel like we had to do anything. I know too many people that had to have everything all squared away before having a baby, and they are still waiting for that baby to come. So I didn't want to wait too long!

Find a job that would be flexible and have good work/life balance programs.

Buy a home.

Sell the co-op.

Pay off all student loans and car loans.

Reduce caffeine intake and start vitamins.

Take one more trip out of the country together.

Re: what did/do you and your partner have to do *first* before TTC

Dh and I have good jobs and a house. To us having a family is more important than taking vacations, but everyone is different.

The more we think about it, there never really is a certain time that is the right time to start a family. Things will always come up, bills will always be there, and problems will manage to arise from time to time. To me, the decision was whether or not we are ready to be a mom and a dad.

Re: what did/do you and your partner have to do *first* before TTC

We need more "us" time, as we did not live together beforehand. We've been married over a year, and are totally enjoying being just us right now.

We need to:

DH earning his MBA
Go to Europe
Save, save, save!

then...we will. Right now, we aren't ready but are mature enough to know that.

Re: what did/do you and your partner have to do *first* before TTC

We are NOWHERE near TTC-- but if I am actually looking at this board and responding- that's an indication that I am starting to think about it and want to make a plan.

Originally I wanted to wait til we were married 5 years, but considering I got married when I was 29 I am starting to think that's too long to wait. So, I am thinking like another year or two before we start-- but here is my "list:"

- travel as much as possible to places I have always wanted to see or places I have been dying to go back to

- have a decent amount of money saved-- our savings keeps waxing and waning due to home improvements

- have a little more us time. The last year has been crazy and I feel like we did not get to enjoy each other as much as possible. I also feel like we need to work on being a team more with taking care of our home, so when a baby does come, it will not be total and utter chaos

- arrive at a place in my career where i feel good at a company that I think will be understanding. I just started a new job and so far so good-- I have had some really terrible work experiences over the last couple of years. I hope it's all behind me.

Honestly, I never thought I would be READY as mich as I always saw myself with kids.. but I just had a friend who had a baby a couple of weeks ago-- and I have to say, the experience has made me look at children differently. I felt like if she can do it, so can I. I think bascially I have just been a big baby- no pun intended of course!
