I would do the same. When you have kids, you move on to Grandma & Grandpa.

Well i call my in laws by thier first names. But when i was writting out my wedding thank yous and birthday cards i just write mom and dad. I feel it would be a little wierd to write it out with thier first names and the card coming from thier son.

i write mom and dad - i do that whenever i give a card from me and DH (even before we were married). it's so much nicer, IMO, to treat them like family that way! an i think they will be touched, even if you call them by their first names normally.

Well, you could be cheesy like my mom and write dear Mom & Dad "X" ( insert last initial)

When speaking to them, I avoid calling them anything but, when addressing Christmas/B-day cards from DH and I, I write Mom and Dad (even though I don't call them that).

Same here.
Luckily, my ILs don't ever write "Dear ___" (or even the date ) on cards. They just sign them. It's the oddest thing to me -- but hey, it avoids messes like this. I write NOTHING!
(ETA - Well, I sign them, of course! I just don't write "Dear" anything!)
