What do these people do for a living???
I was just watching House Hunters on HGTV. This couple with 2 young kids (3 & 1 1/2 maybe) just moved into a 1.6 million dollar house in Florida. He works from home. It was a new construction that wasn't finished. There was an infinity pool in the back. While looking at the home they complained that the pool wasn't screened in. Well they just showed the house after they moved in. They showed the $75,000 screen they put up against the back of the house. My GOD!! 1.6 million for the house and another $75,000 for the screen and I'm sure they upgraded some things too since the house was new construction. What do these people do and why can't I do it too???

Re: What do these people do for a living???
It blows my mind......
But the flip side is that people like that often can't really afford these homes and that contributes to the mortgage mess that we are experiencing now!

I was wondering the same thing! What really drives me crazy about that show is when a couple looks for a new house because their 2800 sq ft house is getting "cramped" ever since their baby arrived. How much space do these f(#$(*ing people need?!!!

Re: What do these people do for a living???
i knowwwww
i saw a different show the other day, same concept. Both husband and wife were mortgage brokers. I couldn't help but wonder if they are still as financially secure as when they were on TV - I'd be willing to bet things have changed for them too.

I totally agree!!! And honestly, our families did it with soooooo much less...where did our need for bigger and better come from?
Doesn't anyone start to feel OWNED by all their $hit?
And back to the OP, the faster it comes, the faster it goes. Maybe they can BUY it but time will tell if they can AFFORD it. There is a difference. Can they buy it? Yes, there are ways to do it. Can they afford it? That's a horse of a different color.

It's not really about $hit for me, but about more and larger rooms. I hate feeling cramped.

Re: What do these people do for a living???
In regards to the original post, maybe the family made a significant profit when they sold their previous home, which would bring down their mortgage considerably.
And yes, there are people who can afford these homes without struggling. Granted they're not the majority, but there are plenty of them out there.
I don't think those who bought million dollar homes are the reason why we have a "mortgage mess". In fact, I would venture to say it's those who purchased 200k-500k homes who bought above their means. How many million dollar homes do you see in foreclosure? Not many. They're generally in lower-income areas.

Maybe they come from wealth? You never know! I try to focus on what I have rather than what I don't

Re: What do these people do for a living???
DH and I talk about this all the time! (he's an accountant...lol) We've come to the conclusion that...
yes-people at ALL home price points contributed to the mortgage mess-if you go in thinking you'll get a $700K house, they approved you for a mil, and you think..ok, I'll make more over time...
AND...people are NOT afraid of debt..I can't sleep at night if I owe someone money for picking something up for me (ok, I'm over dramatizing there, but you get the point)...people are simply using credit and not scared that it will ever get paid back...we have some friends like this and they live high...sometimes you want to...then you know what's piled behind the door, so to speak...

Re: What do these people do for a living???
Another poster said they could've made money on their previous homes and rolled it into this one. This is what I think also.
My IL's made the bulk of their money by buying properties low and selling high. They moved several times while DH was growing up but now they are living in a "free" house and are retired at 52 years old.
They custom built their last two homes. FIL was very involved in the process (he's a contractor and fireman by trade) and was working side by side with the contractors. While they were building the second to last home, one of the new contractors on the job said to another "I wonder what this guy does for a living." FIL, with his tool belt on, turned around and said "I'm a fireman."
