for people with houses where the formal living room/dining room run into one another...
did you paint both rooms one color? we are buying a high ranch and the living room and dining room are upstairs next to one another and nothing really separates the 2 rooms. we were going to do the entire thing the same color, because we didn't know how to distinguish it otherwise and didn't want it to look funny. what did anyone else do? and can you post pictures (whether you did it one color or separate colors)? thanks!

Re: for people with houses where the formal living room/dining room run into one another...
I have that Krista. I painted part one color and then another color that is a shade darker in the dining room.
I was in the same boat where I didn't want all one color. Most of our living room and hallway (toward the BR) is one color (BM Shabby Chic) and one wall of our LR and all of dining room is another color (a little darker- BM Woodacres)
Check the pictures in my album or let me know if you want to come by and see.

thanks ivelysse, i checked out your pictures (everything looks so freakin' beautiful, by the way i'm so jealous!) but with your living room and dining room, there is a small partition between the 2 rooms, it looks like - where the wall comes out a bit all around to distinguish the 2 rooms. ours doesn't even have that... it literally is like one huge room. so there's one wall that runs from one side of the house to the other, living room wall to dining room wall, with absolutely nothing to separate the 2, so it would kind of be like, draw a line down the middle, paint one side one color, the other side another color and there's nothing to separate it. i think it might look dumb

That room you saw in the dining room picture is the great room and yes there is a wall. But my living room and dining room are completely open. I don't think I have any pics online of my living room because right now I have no furniture in it. I can try to take a picture. I think you could paint the dining room color to a corner and then paint the living room another color. I think it might work.

I have a hi-ranch too. We didn't do all one color, we did coordinating colors (red and white in dining room with wainscotting and light brown with white trim in living room).
It's very hard to describe, but I had this vision of separating the rooms with curtains that tied back, and my DH went with it and built a rod in under crown molding he ran across to separate the two rooms. Maybe seeing pictures will help you get a better idea.
this is what it looked like when we moved in (Oct 2000):
a work in progress:
more recent pic, from the living room looking into dining room (kitchen is to right of dining room):
I am sure I have more pics, but this is all I can find right now.

I'll posted picture above. That's what we had. Along with the crown molding along the top with the curtain rod, DH hung a piece of decorative molding down the side, which you can see in the pictures, to separate the rooms.

Re: for people with houses where the formal living room/dining room run into one another...
This wall is the wall to the right of my front door. It is a long wall that connects my dining room and living room. We painted it the same color as the dining room. Then you can see the living room color in the corner.
This is the window facing the front (from the LR).
Here is another shot of the long wall.
This is the wall to the left of my front door which is the same color as the living room.
This is the wall in front of you as you walk into my house.
We don't have any real furniture in our living room so don't mind the mess/emptiness.
Hope it helps.

Our is wide open... DR, LR and Kitchen also. All walls in kitchen are tiled. Walls in DR and LR are the same (beige). LR had red accents and DR has red & gold/yellow accents

i've seen your pic before and i love it! we don't have that crown molding to separate the 2 rooms, if we did it would prob be so much easier. thing is, hubby and i aren't very handy at all. what type of professional would we even hire if we decided to do something like that?

Re: for people with houses where the formal living room/dining room run into one another...
i see what you did ivelysse, i don't think it's the same way our layout is though. because there's one wall where half the room is the dining room and the other half is the living room. that wall is what's giving us problems. i'm going over to the house tomorrow and i'll take pics and post. thanks for everyone's help!

If you wanted to do 2 different colors, my ILs have a high ranch and they just have a large piece of molding seperating the rooms.

Our DR and LR are on a L shape but flow into one another, so they're the same color.

Thanks.. As you can see, the molding wasn't there either. DH put it all up. It wasn't that hard, just took him a long time! Maybe a painter or a carpenter could fashion something for you.

We did the same color. We were advised to do so because if we did 2 different colors it would cut off both rooms and make them look smaller.

we didnt do one color, we painted a neutral color and did one accent in the formal living room, but brought that color into the dining room's window treatments-both rooms are color coordinating, being that they are connected.

Re: for people with houses where the formal living room/dining room run into one another...
we are having the same problem with our Hi-Ranch. We have a very open floor plan, even the kitchen is wide open, so it's one big room. We think we are going to paint it all one color, like a tan/beige. But we will have a tile backsplash in the kitchen.
