People living about you
we have a couple that moved in above us that has a small child. the kid runs non stop once we get home. its very noisy. dh tried to talk to them. but they don't see what the big deal is. dh knows that hes a kid. but it seems he's very hyper.
what do you suggest we do?

I suggest you get used to it. There is no way to stop a kid from running around until they're older & playing video games non-stop.
Other than speaking to the landlord (do you rent?) about rugs, I'd say you're out of luck.

Gail I feel for you! We had a simialar situation at our old place. The kids were beyond out of control and their mother would not listen. We unfortunately were the ones that had to move. I understand kids will be kids but their a line to be drawn.

Re: People living about you
I would also talk to your landlord about rugs (if there aren't already rugs down).
Is there a specific area where it's loud that you guys sleep, or hang out? Do you know what the layout of their apartment is like? Maybe you could ask them to just not have their child run ALL over..maybe they could keep him to a few rooms or away from a cetain spot so it's not happening right over your bedroom or something.
That *****..I know that there are no gaurantees, but when we had an apartment our landlord was really cool and would make sure that he didn't rent out the upstairs apartment to families with small kids (we were on the first floor) Unfortunately he rented it out to a woman with large kids who all slept during the day and were up being ridiculously loud ALL NIGHT long (every night) but that's another story, lol

Re: People living about you
There's really nothing you can do. We lived next door to a couple with an infant. The walls were really thin. For 1.5-2 years, the child screamed at all hours of the night. We bought earplugs, white noise machines, etc. It was awful. We live in a great place now, but I feel your pain.

I understand your frustration but as others have said you just have to live with it. Think about it. How would you react to someone asking you to keep you child from running around? Pretty PO'd I'd suspect.
if i was in there shoes, i would apologize. when my child will start to get wild, i will calm him down. i would think the running around would be loud.
we're just going to have to grin and bear it

If you can tell me how you get a small child to stop running around, I would love to hear it!! And really, how do you know he's "wild" and "hyper"? Maybe your floors are just really thin

Re: People living about you
I'd love the secret of making a kid not run around too. I'd pay money for that info
Aren't there some kind of rules for upstairs neighbors and carpets? Like 80% of the space has to be carpeted? I'm not sure if I have the % right or if it applies to any type of apt but I could swear there is something to this effect in existence. The landlord would have to supply it I guess. Unless there is already carpet and it's just loud. I've never been in that situation luckily - I could see how the noise could drive you insane. Now I have the kids who run around and I'd also be stumped as to how to keep them from running around. I think the solution lies in getting some more padding in the floors.

That would be the last thing that make me be more quiet.
Gail, I would talk to the landlord about carpeting guidelines or additional padding. Unfortunately, there can be noise when living in close quarters comes. I certainly feel your pain.

Re: People living about you
As someone who had to put up with running/screaming children and incessant barking dogs from above, I certainly feel your pain.
For the amount of money I paid in rent, you would think that entitled me to SOME quiet. At least the ability to sleep through the night.
I'm happy to say I have that now. But that's because we just bought a house.
The last ones we had to deal with had hardwood floors and would not take off their shoes when they came home. So the clip-clopping was constant, over our bedroom, till about 2 or sometimes 3am.
We did confront them and they insisted they don't even walk around that much or understand how it could be THAT loud.
So one of us went upstairs and the other stayed down with them. I walked around their rooms with my heels on, and they soon understood the situation.
They agreed to buy an area rug and limit the foot traffic in their guest room (over our bedroom) after 10pm.
As far as kids go... I'm not a parent, I can't relate to trying to keep a child under control. A part of me is indignant when I hear that absolutely no attempt is made to keep the peace. You pay as much rent as someone else does, and I don't think you should have to be subjected to that constantly just because they are.
Good luck with it and with getting into your own home.

I agree 100% and this is what I was getting at. You BOTH live there and pay rent every month. While I understand that they have a kid, and that kids run around, they live above other people and should take that into consideration. I feel there should be SOME kind of compromise. Maybe they could get one of those child safety gates that would limit the running to a few rooms or half of the apartment. I also am not a parent, so maybe these are just the crazy rantings of one who doesn't understand , but it seems like something could be worked out so that you guys can relax at night

I agree.....Personally I wouldn't make a big deal out of it because I would be afraid that they would make it even worse out of spite....good luck though

Gail, please! When your neighbours find the secret of making a small child SIT STILL, please ask her to market it because I am desperate for some of it.
I think you have to grin and bear it...kids are kids, and the fact that they are paying rent also entitles them to live as they see fit.

Re: People living about you
I wonder how many of you would change your opinion or attitude if you were in her situation. If you were kept awake and constantly annoyed by the noise around you.
No one gives a sh*t about anyone else around them anymore, do they? That's just sad. To not even try to compromise with a reasonable request.
I have the "suck it up and deal" opinion about a lot of things too. But I've done plenty for my neighbors and other people in my life to keep the peace.
What a selfish world we live in.

I am in that situation... I have an upstairs neighbor that makes all sorts of noises at all sorts of times. I swear it sounds like he's bowling sometims and he must be even clumsier then me for the amount of stuff he drops...LOL We asked him to be mindful of the time nicely, we asked mgmt to inspect the apt for proper carpeting. Nothing.
There are people that slam doors, talk loudly down the hall with marble floors, play tv/radio a little on the loud side, etc. But these are things I knew I would have to live with when I moved into a building with neighbors on all sides.
I have also been in the reverse situation where my downstairs neighbor basically harrassed us for doing nothing extraordinary. Walking around the house (rarely in shoes). If I dropped something they were right there with the broom. My husband used to get up early for work and they flushed the toilet repeatedly while he showered so I guess they scold him with hotter water?? They complained to mgmt about us all the time. We put in the thickest carpet padding we could find and basically tip toed in our own home because they made us so uncomfortable. It was finally resolved but it's a miserable way to live -- especially when we weren't doing anything wrong.

I think there is a HUGE difference between a child running around and something that can be changed, like neighbours having loud parties, walking around in stiletto heels all night, and just loudness in general. You can not make a child do something they don't want to do unless they are asleep, or strapped down. If her neighbours were playing loud music or walking around in stiletto heels, I would have a very different response to this problem.

I also think that there is really nothing you can do. As another poster said, put yourself in their shoes.
Unfortunately when you rent in a place where there is an upstairs, downstairs, or side neighbor, there isn't going to be the "silence" you are looking for.

We had this in our apartment. She slid a note under the door saying "I know you get up at this time, leave for work at this time, come home at this time, go to bed a this time." It was very stalkerish. We got the thickest padding possible and she still complained non-stop. I felt like a prisioner in our own house.

There is a huge difference between someone being loud by way of having music on, parties, loud TV's, etc. A child running around in their own home, well there isn't much you can do about it and I think it's wasted energy to complain.

As I said above, DH and I lived next to a screaming infant, then toddler for almost 2 years. Most nights we woke up from the screams. The crying was so loud, it felt like we shared a bedroom with the child. There were times we could hear the crying when we were in our living room (2 rooms away from their apartment) or our loft. It was miserable. We tried everything possible to drown out the noise.
Our landlord was aware of the issue as were the neighbors, but honestly, there was nothing we could do. We could've moved out, but that really wasn't an option for us at that point. We hoped the child would grow out of it, but that didn't happen either. I feel for anyone in that situation, but unfortunately it's a risk you take when living in close quarters.

Re: People living about you
WHO CARES if it's a kid making the noise? How about some common courtesy ?? A screaming baby you may not be able to control, but a toddler running around til all hours of the night ?? Come on !! -
A parent may not be able to stop the kid from running around and playing, in the middle of the day, and they shouldn't ....you can't expect a little kid to sit around all day doing nothinng - but they can make an attempt to be considerate of their neighbors .......put a rug down in the rooms the child plays in most, take his/her shoes off in the apartment - And really? If this is happening late at night or very early in the morning, then yes, you can calm the kid down and stop them from running around ......
She doens't pay a small fortune in rent to 'suck it up and deal with it' .......that is just ridiculous. - Are you in a private home or a buliding ? If you're in a building, those above you are supposed to have 80% of their floors covered. I'd call the landlord and complain if politely discussing it with your upstairs neighbor doesn't work -
